My first time roll hunting! (Well, sort of.)

My husband and I like to give the trick-or-treaters something a little different. This year, we decided to put together little bags (cheap on Amazon) with a Kennedy half dollar and a small candy. Who knows, maybe we'll inspire some kids to learn something about coins?
So, we ordered up a hundred bucks in Kennedys and waited three weeks for the bank to get them. Well, when we unrolled them tonight, darned if there weren't 4 64's and a 68! Pretty good for my first time roll searching (even though that wasn't my intention)! Happy Halloween!

Wow...much better than I have done..... searched many, many rolls of halves... at least 50... and have not found one silver or even a 40% coin.... Congratulations...Cheers, RickO

Wow that is a great find, especially for just searching through $100. I've gone through many boxes and a counter bag or two and the only 90% that I've found are two Franklins(in the same box), I think 2 64's and an 1876 Prussian 5 mark coin. There is usually a 40%er or two per box, sometimes more, sometimes none.
Edited to add:
You must have a very friendly bank to let you order just $100 in halves. At mine it's either you order the full $500 box or you are out of luck. They also ask me about 10 times to make sure I wasn't going to just go through them and bring them back.

Searching rolls is great, sometimes they contain a surprise or two. Like your thought on adding a unique coin to the kids Halloween Treat Bag.
How did you find a Prussian 5 mark coin hunting rolls of Half's???? They are the size of a Silver Dollar!

Right you are.. Correction: It was a two Mark coin, had to go grab it and check. It was in a coin counter bag along with a bunch of car wash tokens with a "value" of $1 each. Unfortunately I didn't use them as I planned to.

Great idea for the trick-or-treaters, I wonder how many of them would recognize a half dollar? Should spark some interest!
Also, incredible haul on the silver halves. Give you an idea of how rare your find is: I've searched $5,400 dollars worth of halves so far to match your total of 4 90%'s!

Very cool and nice score on the silver at face value too!
If you give out 100 of them on Halloween and a couple of those kids save their coin or take the time to look it up or even start collecting, it will be totally worth the effort!

you should be able to weigh a roll of coins to determine if there is a silver coin in the lot right?
I would think so cruisersk1...... I made a chart to determine how many copper cents in a roll. The 40% coins are a little tougher as they are close to clad in weight and tolerance. With the cents I also had to be fairly accurate with the wrapper tare weights.
1964: 12.50 grams
1965-1970: 11.50 g
1971-Date: 11.34 g
1976 Silver Collector Coins: 11.50 g
1992-Date Silver Proof: 12.50 g

1964: 0.259 grams
1965-1970: 0.400 g
1971-Date: 0.454 g

Thanks, everyone! I'm happy to report that the Kennedys were a success - at least among the kids who noticed them before dropping them in their bags. We had almost 175 trick-or-treaters, and I share the hope that one or two might be inspired to learn more about coins.
I hadn't realized that the bank had to order them in $500 lots - they didn't tell me until I picked them up. But they said it was OK, the tellers had no trouble in disbursing the rest. So maybe there's some more silver floating around town...
I sure feel lucky that there was such a nice treat for me this Halloween, too! ;-)
Nice find! I just got a box of pennies from the bank to go through. Two of the end coins were wheat cents.
Did you go back and see if they had any of the other $400 left? It would definitely be worth going through considering what you found in the first $100.

Hi, everyone! Just to close the loop, on the other $180 of Kennedys, there were 4 40% coins, plus two 2012's that must have come out of mint sets. So to sum up, in $280, there were 4 90%'s, 5 40%'s, and 2 mint set coins.
It was fun to open them, and now will be fun to give the grandkids their birthday money in halves!
