I collect silver bars, rounds, foreign, etc.

Over the years I have not discussed too much about what I collect. As you know I finished the Mercury dime set last week and I thought I'd share a picture of some of my silver "trinkets." Some of these have been in the tray so long they have toned. :) I really like the dated bars from the 1973-1974 era, as I was young, wanted them, but could not afford them.

Nice group... I have a few bars and rounds... mostly of personal significance... such as my 'Secretariat' bar, great horse and I watched all three of his Triple Crown wins... Just got a Canadian 11/4 oz round on the BST.... The Bison... really nice. Cheers, RickO

They look great and they also appear to be on a velvet tray. It has been my experience that silver coinage stored on velvet takes on toning in a short period of time and that 0.999 fine silver tones even more quickly. Is this also what you have noticed?

I like piles of silver myself. If you ever get tired of them you can give them to me. I'll give em a good home :)

    Tom,
I noticed that too. The silver American Eagles tone quickly on the velvet trays inside my safe.

Nice! Very original too. I also have a variety of silver. Some have a better premium than just a troy ounce of Silver. Ex: The first year Maple Leaf (1988), Silver Eagles (certain years) and esp. different years of the Englehard Bars. Like I said, These are a whole lot more than just silver. By looking at your collection, you'll agree with me I'm sure. Cool set you have there. Wonder If our Host would grade some of these? :/

@TomB.... I have some Morgans/Ikes stored in a miniature coin cabinet with velvet lined drawers (green).... and while I am aware that this often accelerates tarnish... these have not. I cannot tell if the velvet is a special type or just standard.... bought the coin cabinet 20 years ago off ebay. Strange.... I did have some velvet storage boxes that did cause tarnish... got rid of them.....not sure if it was the wood, adhesive or the velvet. Cheers, RickO

Beautiful collection of silver bars! When they are collected for their art, theme, and/or personal attachment, the pleasure they can give is at least as much as that derived from coins. If they are collected for the wrong reasons (overpriced sales and promotional ends) they may ultimately disappoint those who think of ROI primarily.

Very beautiful . . . and what a fun way to own silver!

@Type2 @MICHAELDIXON Both of those are neat collections! Is there a good reference book that treats silver bars generally?
    Thanks for sharing!

The last one I saw was very outdated (1990's I think) and I have not seen another.

    Type 2,

Is that album PVC free? It looks like on one the ones I've seen that really do some damage.
It's such a nice collection, thought I'd ask.

Sweet collections, I'm partial to old JM poured bars and anything pre Hunt Bros.

This is the best reference book for Art Bars I have found. If I remember correctly, the son updated the book in 2008, the original author passed away. I sent them an email a year or two ago and the son got back to me in a day or two. You can find the books used on eBay every once in a while for like $40-$50.

Yes I think so, I ordered 4 new bar books will be here today and will switch that one out it's the only one with PVC. I'll take more pic when I'm done with that book. I'm pulling the rest of the books to look and see if they are PVC as well just in case. I may need to order more books will see. Maybe get some books for rounds as well. Thank you for the link to order the bar book. I have a old bar book but haven't opened it in some time but will pick one up as well and Thank you to "MICHAELDIXON" for posting this it just may have started a new spark that went out some time ago.
