this is NOT correct. carbon spots CAN be removed from copper coins such that you would not know afterwards of the "enhancement". believe me, i have seen it done.
I've bought some Rainbow Morgan’s from TBT and they are great. On their ads the say NO AT, which as a buyer I like that assurance.
I think these are like works or art. You buy them because you like them. And like art, you don't want to buy a forgery.
AND Pushkin is absolutely correct. I would even go farther and say there are MANY people who could do it. There is no mystery here.
I think the only way to detect AT would be to do a spectral analysis of the coin looking for evidence of an accelerant used to make those new molecules, which would not be present in a “naturally” toned coin.
The best a person can hope for is an expert opinion, but even the experts can’t “know” how those molecules got that way.
The sky is blue for a reason. The organs we have called eyes don't see objects. They react to a small spectrum of electro-magnetic radiation (visible light) that bounces off objects. Our eyes send different signals based on the frequency of the light to our brain that interprets those signals into the color we “see”.
To create color means you need to change the frequency of the light when it hits the molecules. Any non-organic chemist can make new molecules for you. If you want to go down to the atomic or sub-atomic levels, there are many people that can manipulate that too. Most have no interest in making colored coins. The ones that do will have varying levels of skill.
I couldn’t appreciate mine if I thought there was some guy wearing rubber gloves painting my coins before somewhere along the line before I bought it, but even when I buy from respected experts, I can never know for sure.

I guess you need to more precisely define "MANY" because most of what I see is easily identified as AT and the experts I know, chemist with M.S. or PhD's and a thorough background in numismatics, tell me it's not easy to do.
The longer I live the more convincing proofs I see of this truth, that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice is it possible for an empire to rise without His aid? Benjamin Franklin
keets - I'll get over it, but I really dislike reading through a thread about half way until I discover that it's years old and then I go the the end and see that the poster resurrecting it adds nothing to the thread to justify its rebirth. Just my pet peeve.

wow 9 years later and I still remember that clown, and I still say they all looked blowtorched. Ill admit the NGC eagles did have a nice color, but anyone with half a brain knew it was not natural. Al you like digging this stuff up eh? and wheres my old buddy steve these days?

Absolute certainty was never at issue.
