It has been widely reported that the 1870-S half dime and Three Dollar Gold piece are each unique, among coins that are currently known to exist. Furthermore, the 1870-S is the RAREST silver dollar. Many collectors do not realize, however, that many 1870-S quarter eagles can be purchased for less than $1000 each. 1870-S half dollars, which are rare, sometimes cost less than $50. So, a collector can pay a modest price for a coin of one of the most famous of dates.

Have the members of this forum thought much about 1870-S coins? Does anyone here share my view that 1870-S quarter eagles and half dollars are more appealing than otherwise approximately equal coins of the same respective types because of the 1870-S date?

Interesting article - the 1870 S coinage is a sexy as they pretty much all represent the semi keys in their respective series. With some time and patience, one can put together a 1870S gold set with the $1G, quarter and half Eagle, the Eagle and Double Eagle. Now that's pretty cool set.

I've always loved the 1870-S coins that are obtainable. I have three 1870-S halves, but none of the others. Still looking for the quarter with my metal detector.
