"... the company bases its $62 million estimate on finding 25 cents in each ton of waste, with about 250 million tons of garbage sent to the landfill each year."
Plus that Stella, of course. ![]()

It's not a realistic number, at least not being recovered by the waste to energy plants that Covanta owns. You would need 350 - 2,000 tpd WTE plants to recover that 25c per ton. Covanta only has 45 such plants and most of them are not nearly 2,000 tpd in size. Toss in all the other waste recovery plants owned by other companies and you still wouldn't get close. And this assumes they have the magnets and metal sorters to pick up every dime, quarter, and half dollar with 90% efficiency....which they don't.
Big picture, 80-85% of the nation's waste still goes directly to the landfill without any sorting and minimal processing. So the bulk of that potential $62 MILL/yr in loose change has to be dug out of landfills, which is quite costly. Figure that the cost of operating a CAT 936 to 966 Wheel loader per hour will be far more expensive. The coins that are recovered are literally chump change compared to the money the plants make in burning municipal solid wastes and special waste streams. The facilities typically charge $50-$90/ton to process waste. So 25c per ton is negligible even after operational costs are factored in.
They say they're "in the early stages" of a program to recover coins. To me this says they've run a pilot at one/some plant(s) for a short time, and recovered $0.25/ton from this sample. Based on this, they extrapolated and jumped to the $62 Mil headline on the press release. Note that they don't state that they could recover that much, only that Americans throw away that amount.
With that I would own about 4 - 6 properties, some high end (plus a yacht similar to the Pisces Class Yacht in GTAO) in different parts of the country, each with a sugar baby to go with it along with a high end sports car. The rest would be invested mainly in high dividend yield stocks, I might buy 20 MS65 CAC Saints for Spirits and Grins. I would spend a few days at one property, relax then travel to the next one texting my gal there I am on way on the list sorta like I do with my properties in GTAO. I would have no interest in marriage (divorce court would bankrupt me plus small children get on my nerves) or traditional dating whatsoever and any coin collecting would be bulk accumulation - rolls of AGE, AGB. I would put together my dream set of Mexico Gold 50 Pesos in highest PCGS grade I deemed affordable.. Would I buy any bust dimes, half cents or large cents - heck no I like half dollar coins or larger silver and gold only. My recent buys were a 1911 PDS set of Barber 50c in G/VG just a few bucks over melt and a Tokulu 1 oz horse coin in NGC 70 for about $16 over BV. I would also build my dream Model RR layout modeling the CNJ. In GTAO my $800 k stilt house in Vinewood Hills (Beverly Hills) has a Basement Heist Planning Room. This would make a nice coin man cave.....with huge safe in my home in LA I would have.

What could you do with $62 Million?
the same thing I could do with a much smaller amount --- buy a nice chunk of land, put a modest home smack dab in the middle of it with a sign at the gate. I can't tell you what the sign would say because they would ban me.
Ah the stuff dreams are made of..... well, that much disposable cash would provide a lot of help for some good causes..... Cheers, RickO
I could finish my Dime sets and Nickel set and start some other set I have always wanted to do.
Guess the metal detector people should go to the dump instead of the beach.
I would retire and open a ganja and cheese steak stand on Paradise Island.
I would invest the money and with the income I could buy things without too much concern since every year a new amount would be recieved.
The various plants with metal separation capability have been sifting out loose change in very small quantities for the past 25 years. So you could say they have been running "trial" programs for that long....lol. Last I knew they'd pick up a few thousand dollars per year in change. It helps to pay for the annual summer picnics and Christmas parties. It's a very high debt business with a tough risk/reward model. So anything you can slap up to gain interest from new investors or municipalities is always worth a shot. This one will likely never make any financial sense as the cost of maintaining vibrating metal separation systems is quite high. The technology to sift out "some" change has been there for 20-25 years? Why today if not back then?
I would get new tires on my car and maybe an alignment.
That is the most painful story I ever heard.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
And thanks! This will be a good current event report for my kid!
