Toning premium on classic commems

erwindocerwindoc Posts: 5,325 ✭✭✭✭✭
How much of a pricing bump does attractive toning add to the interest on these coins? Been watching a few lately and seen some nicely toned 64's sell for 66 money for white coins. Anyone with experience in the set care to shed some light on this for me?

Hate to be vague, but it just depends on the eye appeal of the toning, the vibrancy of the coin and how the particular issue comes.

Some toning can be worth an extra $25 or $50, some can make the coin double in value, and some can make a coin worth $1,000s.

This is my jam. In top pop KILLER toning can be 5x plus easy.

In 65 and 66 killer toning can 2x easy.

Attractive toning in 64- 66 the premiums are modest these days compared to years past.

I agree with all the above; also the premium depends on how hard it is to find that particular issue with color. Try to find a multi-color Huguenot, Bridgeport, Hawaii, Missouri or Lexington..almost impossible.

Thanks for the input. I learned with other series that it is all over the place and dependent on the colors and location of the toning. Commems appear to be no different. Just hate to be buried in one just cause I got carried away.

although I like color and feel it really lends itself to enhancing the designs of most Commem's, the premiums work against me being willing to place too much money in them. I think a nice alternative is a brilliant coin with intense luster.

    Justacommmem,
Your first sentence is interesting. Have I observed incorrectly that most of the top pop coins in any set have killer toning, and that the killer toning is a big part of why that coin edged out the rest?

It seems in Washington Quarters and Franklin halves, for example, the toning premium almost disappears entirely for a top pop coin.
I'd like my copper well done please!

For years I never recalled seeing a Connecticut with Christmas tree colors. Most are neutral to ugly mottled browns, blue, silver, puke yellow. About 10-12 years ago ran into one with bag toned Morgan colors with vibrant green, red, silver, yellow....a literal Christmas tree of colors on the big oak. It was in a very old fatty NGC MS66 holder, maybe that holdered helped. Very nice coin in all regards. I paid 2x bid ($1600 at that time iirc) and that was just on a hunch. I've never paid more than a 10% premium for Commen colors before this. I wonder where that coin went too? Had I known MJ was doing that set, I'd have run it by him.

    Pretty Connecticuts are tough.

Sometimes, even blazing white coins with amazing luster can have good premiums. For example, Sesquicentennial Halves and Hawaiians often are drab and somewhat indifferent. Blazing, lustrous ones are easy to sell.

In my mind, toning affects Commems more than most other series.

Seems anything remotely attractive is license to jack prices and they sell.

Having just taken a commemorative BATH, I'd guess it would have to flash neon to get even greysheet bid.

Nah. I just had some inconsequential and mediocre stuff and didn't expect to do much except liquidate them to end my short sortie into a few commems of subjects related to the western expansion of the US.

    My interest fizzled.

I would not spend $1 extra for tarnish... of any type.... I prefer the blast white coins with great luster... or the well traveled commercial look...Cheers, RickO

Interestingly enough, I saw a nicely toned commem this morning.

It is one that is fairly easy to find with nice toning.

It was nice but not nearly the nicest I have seen.

If I remember correctly it was a 64 and was bid up to nearly 4x average price with a long

    time to go.

Here is one I paid a premium for. But not so much for the small amount of color and very nice luster, although I think it looks nice. I saw a member here post this years ago, and just really liked the white original frosty, looks like a pearl skin. Rarely do I see this on any coin these days. Used to see the white pearl skin on Walkers. But that went away for the dip jar and upgrades IMO.

Anyway, 6 years after I seen this coin, I owned it. Thanks to Skyman again for the assist a while back. Have sold my collection, and this I still own. Oh yeah, some folks these days call that skin "Haze." image
