Praying to be outbid....

Idiot.
I bid on a low value proof 1992-S Washington Quarter on GC thinking it was a SILVER version. Only figured it out in the last 30 minutes it was the clad version.
(Non idiots will quickly point out that it is rather obvious from both the AUCTION DESCRIPTION and SLAB LABEL!!!)
Oh, well....
Anyone want to cop to doing anything similar? Or WORSE!?

Certainly not something anyone wants to make a habit of...
I think you'd be in fair territory to cancel a bid in that situation...

Don't think the option exists on GC. Guess one could call and moan....
But, being a low value lot, I think it more appropriate to just pay, and eventually sell. No sense complicating someone else's life over my mistake!!

That was the last time I executed a bid "on the fly." I eventually got it sold at about a $100 loss and called it tuition. Wisdom is what's left over when the pain of a mistake fades.

Call them and ask them to keep it and put it up in the next auction for you
That's how I roll
Bid First - Read later.
That's how I roll
That's the plan! Reading is over-rated.
Sometimes I'll bid for fun with the hope that someone outbids me. It's usually when I see an auction that has a very low current high bid and I decide it needs some help. But I still restrain my bidding such that if I do win it, I'll still be happy. It's just not a priority item I want.
It's called, "Tuition".
Ha Ha good one but true, cheap to
did you get out bid?
Nope...I had won the lot when I posted.
Hoping that someone will outbid me seems just as useless as hoping people WON'T outbid me. Dang other bidders! It's like they have a mind of their own.....

So, you're randomly shill bidding?
Lance.
I have made the mistake more than once, I think everyone who bids at auction enough is eventually guilty of it.
I have never asked to retract a bid, I think the only time I would do that is if it's an obvious mistake like adding an extra digit to a bid.

I had 8% Ebay bucks on Friday, thought I would try to pick up a PCGS 70 2016 Gold Mercury Dime. They were going in the $245 range, so with my Ebay bucks I would get $20 back and only be paying $225. I thought that was a good deal.
I bid $245 on one, and ONLY THEN NOTICED IT WAS LISTED AS BULLION AND NO EBAY BUCKS! Some folks list theirs as Bullion category-no Ebay bucks, but most list them as mercury dime category- you get Ebay bucks. There was about four hours left in the auction.
At the last minute someone outbid me.
Anyway, would not have been the worst thing in the world to have won, but I (hopefully) learned a lesson.

Don't sweat it, Ian.
I already sent in payment last night....and I really meant it when I said, "No reason to complicate someone else's life because of MY mistake".
And, hey, what's $30 between friends?

Many years ago I was placing bids on a Teletrade auction, and was pleasantly surprised at how cheaply I won several lots.
Until the coins came and I realized I had been bidding using the previous week's catalog.

I learned that lesson a week ago when buying some Barber Dimes that the seller had listed in both Dimes and Bullion. Evidently it's possible to put an auction in multiple categories. After winning it and paying, I discovered I earned no Ebay Bucks because it was cross-listed in Bullion.
Don't sweat it, Ian.
