LOL...great selling concept on ebay

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,556 ✭✭✭✭✭
Saw an item I was interested in (IHC).

Price was a bit high, but there was a Make an Offer on it. Ebay has 6% rebate (ebay bucks) right now, for some folks and I was lucky enough to get it, so I was pretty tempted.

Started watching the coin a week or two ago. I was the 8th person watching (according to ebay). Now there are 5.

Looked at it again tonight, as, like I said, pretty tempted...

Did a double take. Price was moved up 7% overnight. This was the 2nd price adjustment in its history that I can see on ebay.

I can see moving the price that quickly, maybe, if an item is hot and/or unique.

This really isn't either. Not super easy to replace, but not unique.

Just find it an interesting way to do things (maybe they were trying to capitalize on the 6% ebay bucks thinking that people will pay more because they get a kickback from ebay.....).

I can see LOWERING the price on something you want to sell that you have had listed for awhile, but not upping it.

Oh well. Not a rant. Just something I found myself laughing about tonight.

I'm not even going to make an offer as, while my offer would have been lower end given the previous price, it would smell of a lowball offer now, imho.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I've notice that too, seems when the bay has a rebate going some sellers up the price, and as you stated it's always something
that I had my eye on.
So i just keep on searching.

I recall some ebay sellers posting on here that some coins that had gone unsold for a while sold quickly when they raised the price, counter to intuition.

I find when ebay offers bonus bucks it is the best time to run a sale or promotion!

Also, if it is a make offer, do you feel better is you get a $100 listing for $50, or a $60 listing for $50.

I have not patronized ebay in a long time... however, when I did, I do not recall ever seeing a price bump....amazing. Cheers, RickO

I have raised my prices on BIN on eBay many times during the course of the listing.

I even had a buyer ask to buy one of my coins at my lower BIN price after I raised it. I said no, should have bought it then, but now it is the higher price.

People don't always act rationally - the item might actually sell more quickly at the new, higher price.

There are many recorded instances when raising the produce price has actually increased sales.

Seller sees the watchers, too...price bump can be a good strategy.

It's probably pretty rare that anyone pays the BIN price when there's a BO option. (I can imagine a situation with a hot/desirable coin that might otherwise sell quickly.)

BO's don't work well with one-day eBay bucks. Sellers might take longer than a day to accept offers.

So unless I am super excited about a coin, when I have eBay bucks and I'm shopping for a bargain I usually pass over coins with BO's.

    Weird.

I lower prices on items that don't sell. Conversely, I don't have a problem with raising prices if I think I went too far in lowering them, or even if I just feel like it. Pricing strategy doesn't have to be perfect. The market usually decides anyhow.

If it's the coin I'm thinking of, even at PCGS price guide your over paying for it.
And he is well above that.

worked for me as well by raising the price item sold and lowballers went away.

On the other hand, maybe those watchers for the OP's item were making a bunch of low ball offers and the price was raised to weed out the schmoes.

So ya, it is a great selling strategy.

I believe you are right. LOL

Pricing strategies don't mean much on ebay now. Ebay hides and unhides listings according to their own cryptic rules.

If not sold .. price will go back to original ask seen many a time

    So, just a small update...

I get an email through ebay (I checked, because at first, I thought it was a scam).

I thought it was one of "those" 2nd chance offers....

Anyway, after the price had been adjusted up, like I mentioned, I did a "best offer". Not a total lowball, but still about 10% below the original price...so, quite a bit lower than the revised price.

It was auto-declined and I just moved on. That's been almost 3 weeks now.

Today, I get an email. Reaching out to me and quoting the offer price I did, with the coin, and saying that they are "extremely sorry" that they are "unable to accept your VERY generous offer".

They then countered with a price BELOW what it had originally been listed for....with the explanation of paypal and ebay taking 10% "off the top".

So, ball is in my court now, I guess. I haven't decided if I will reply back for the coin or not. I had talked myself out of it when the price was jacked up like it was.

I guess moving the price up, like they did, didn't work out the best in this case.....

I have had it happen to me many times.

Sometimes I think I price my nicer stuff too low, and people don't think they will be getting the quality at that price.

So raise the price and she flies off the shelf.

    Very counterintuitive, as Kaz stated.

I am also surprised by the coins that I sell that have a best offer option that isn't attempted.

I am guessing here, but I would say that well over 50% of my BO coins do not even get an offer before they sell.

A few weeks ago, an auction I wanted was listed at $48 with BO. I made a BO of $45 and waited. Two days later my $45 BO expired without the seller taking any action. So I made another BO at $44. About 3 hours later, my $44 BO was accepted. The seller never sent me a private message asking about my $45 BO.
    I love the 3 P's: PB&J, PBR and PCGS.
