DANSCO Full Set of Jefferson Nickels

braddickbraddick Posts: 25,242 ✭✭✭✭✭
I picked up a neat set of Jefferson nickels a little while ago and looking at the set this evening made me wonder: What dates/mints should I particularly look at in the hunt for Superb GEM MS67 coins?
I was thinking of potentially sending a few in for grading (especially some of the early proofs).
I know most Jeffersons, even in MS65 condition don't warrant the grading fees, yet I'm sure there are some dates that are lucky to come nice.
Thanks!

pull up the pop report and use that as your guide.

Interesting Dansco Book if it contained early proofs. Are these 1938 to 1950, or the 1968 to present? Yes, you have to be selective. First pick out those coins you think have the look and then check the guides to see if you might have some worth taking a shot on! Good luck!

Get the latest CPG if you do not already have it, complete ch/gem sets are a great source of rare varieties. Some full steps are rare in even lower unc.

Here are quick shots of my purchase. One complete set while the others range from 90% to 80% complete (surprisingly, it is the eighties proofs that are missing- not the earlier, tougher coins). All are mint state and two sets house a complete
set of the 1950- 1964 proofs with the SMSs. There are no late 30's; early 40's proofs. Dansco, surprisingly doesn't offer spots for them even in their 'proof only' album.

Maybe it is the lighting angle, but that Proof Page does not look like proof coinage, dull, non reflective fields. I have been wrong before.

Yeah, taken with an iPhone. Shows NO luster/proof fields. They are though.

I'll try and get a couple of better shots, under lighting (instead of outdoor lighting).

The 1952 is really nice, I'd get that one slabbed for sure. And if any others look like that....you have a winner....

I've learned you can't always go with the price guides. The suggestion above referencing the pop reports is a good one.

I'll seek out additional info. there.
