Draped Bust Half Dollar grade thoughts?

I dont quite get how these are scored yet. Looks VF to me, but our hosts deem otherwise.

Any input on the Overton variety is is appreciated, too!

One similar to this stumped the forum a few weeks ago, as it holdered VG10, and most pegged it at F15 or so.
I agree with VF on this one.

I submitted an 1805 bust quarter recently with the same look and came back as a fine. I think yours should be a touch better than that though.

    Looks like O.102 (T-8). R2.

Fair price? Around $600, more or less. What did PCGS grade it?

It's a Fine 15 now. The feathers look very very VF, and priced right in that range. It looks un-messed-with, too.

    Thanks again!

Prior to scrolling down and seeing your post, I was going with Fine 15. I think it is accurately graded.

I'm in the VF20 camp too. Worst case is Fine 19.

Very wholesome. Are those traces of luster around the peripheral devices? If so, how do you come up with FINE 15? Right shoulder drapery line nearly complete....better than some "full bell lines" I've seen.

Looks better to me than the Fine 15 PCGS photo-grade obverse and the equal and/or better than the VF20.

The kind of coin "destined" for a VF20 holder. And I guess all the future owners/resubmitters of this coin will be "responsible" for additional gradeflation. image

VF20 by wear but if you look closely there are several light scratches on the obverse. It was probably net graded because of the light scratches.

    Fine+/VF it is!

    Future gradeflation? Perhaps.

I'm still a "buy the note not the holder" guy!

CAC worthy at the current F15 level?

For a potential VF draped bust half, I think the quantity of marks is normal or fewer than typically seen. I've seen worse marks on AU58 specimens. And the marks on this coin would not be out of place on lustrous MS61-63 specimens. I know I've seen and owned MS62-63 seated halves with more marks than this bust half.

Now if the dark crust on the coin is more than just dirt (ie light carbon/corrosion into the metal) then I could see them being fussy about that. Sad thing is that there are lightly cleaned and stripped white examples in VF20 holders that probably don't measure up to this coin.

Too much detail for a Fine. I call it VF20

That is a very nice coin for F-15, and CAC would more than likely agree. I have been wrong before.

This is probably the "right" answer.

I've come to the conclusion that a lot of "quiet netting" is done for Draped Bust coinage, (and other items of that era). Browsing through CoinFacts photos of lower grade coins seems to confirm that.

I'm sure the theory is that 1) Many ARE quality coins that just about anyone would be happy to own. But 2) Many are also not perfect for the grade it would get based on wear alone. So "Genuine" holders is a bit harsh.

So, they net them down a step or more.

It seems like a GREAT thing if you are a buyer.....It kind of bites if you are the one submitting, or are a seller.

I think you have to assume that when they sell, the market is smart enough to pick out the "better than the stated grade" coins, and they sell accordingly.

20-25; better surfaces than most of these. But don't expect a cac gold.

In their grading video series, PCGS says that for circulated coins, wear makes up 85% of the grade and eye appeal the other 15%. While that might be generally true, I agree with the others here who figure this coin was net-graded for one reason or another. From my own experience with early US silver, I'd say they'd often rather downgrade a coin than put it in a details holder. A more modern issue wouldn't be given such leeway.

    That said, I wouldn't complain about 15 or a 20. It's nicer than a 12 and not as nice as a 25.....
