Boka heads of '93

Last night Jon Boka's collection of 1794 cents by Sheldon number were sold here in Long Beach by Heritage. Starting with the Heads of '93's:
Of the 5 graded lots, the total realized was: $349,025. This compares to $122,000 for a total of the last known (public) sales, and total PCGS price guide values of $115,500. Some of these prior sales were as recently as Holmes (2009) and Husak (2008).
It may be relevant that four of the 5 lots were in the CC (within the 6 finest known) and the fifth (S19b, R4) was CC#10.
Lot 5302 1794 S-18b R4 PCGS AU58+ CC#6 brought a (IMO) strong $176,250. This beautiful cent last sold publicly for $15000 in 1988.

I really wish I had started with the early dates instead of the middle dates 25 years ago.....that's where the real price appreciation has been.
Thanks Rays - interesting, even though these are WAY out of my league.

I'm a young guy. So question for you. If you were young and had to start now knowing what you know, would you start with the 1790's if you could afford them?
EDIT: It's nice to see what looks to be possibly a strong sale because a few of the last sales seem to have been a little weak.
Successful transactions with: wondercoin, Tetromibi, PerryHall, PlatinumDuck, JohnMaben/Pegasus Coin & Jewelry, CoinFlip, and coinlieutenant.
over Boka's catalog from Heritage. It was well done.
Wish I was still collecting now.
R.I.P. Bear
Will the steady price appreciation continue? I don't know - but downside is probably limited, given past performance (not just my 25 year window) unless everyone stops collecting, or you drastically overpay for something. I would stick with solid value coins, with minimal problems, decent eye appeal, and genuinely scarce for the date/major variety. Best of luck to you!

Past performance while I agree isn't an indicator of future, has been basically shooting to the moon on these coins since 150 years ago or longer. I have the Amato 1796 + 1797 half dollar book and the price changes on the same coin from 100+ years ago til now is crazy.
I think since 2010 or so price have fallen some on coins like this, but generally I agree with you that downside is probably pretty limited.
Generally I don't like coins with any problems - even mint made (not post mint) but I did settle for one with a mint made planchet defect because sometimes buying the best you can afford requires that on the top dates if you aren't made of money. Still love that coin to death though and probably won't ever sell it, so what does it really matter

Early copper does not care what the rest of the coin market is doing. It seemingly just keeps on chugging to higher price levels. Love those 1794 head of '93 varieties, too!
