Best dealers for putting together a raw 7070 type set

Looking for dealers you trust for uncertified coins. I am starting a 7070 set and for the 20th century and some of the 19th century coins I hope to find pleasing examples raw. I am talking about 500.00 or less coins here, no high dollar examples. I just ordered a few from Harlan J. Berk and am browsing JJ Teaparty's selections. Anyone else come to mind.

Good coins are where you find them, especially for a raw set of modestly priced coins. The favorite dealers out there can ask too much for something just as well as anyone else. Since you've been around for 8 yrs. you should be able to trust yourself. Keep your options open.

Thanks roadrunner, just seems like local coin stores are not the friendly places that I remember from years ago. More interested in sizing you up to see what they can get over on you. I just decided I would rather buy online from reputable dealers than go thru the local dealers at this time. I do have a monthly coin show near me that I attended last month. Talking to the promoter who puts on the show he was lamenting that next month he will be only 80 percent full. Sad as this show has been going on for many years.

You have nothing to lose by seeing what your local shops and shows have to offer. For most circ 19th century type coins, I think you could buy them somewhat favorably. But you have to be able to weed out the less than solid for the grade/problem coins and price accurately. I would be very fussy on such a set, settling only for original surfaces, etc. I never felt any of my local shops were trying to pull one over on me. However, what they don't know (ie can't grade or price accurately) can really hurt me if I can't QA their offerings.

David Kahn has lots of great-looking type coins in the price range you mentioned. And he's a nice guy to work with.

For certain coins, I'm not opposed to buying a certified example and cracking it out for the album.

Good point sparky64, I am not opposed to cracking out coins that are generic and worth maybe 1-2 hundred dollars, especially since this is an album that I don't plan on selling as it is just for my enjoyment and to feed my ocd. The coins that I buy that are many times more expensive then I leave these in plastic in case the need or want to sell comes up. I have seen a few 7070 sets that have the stickers taped to the back cover which is a neat touch, thanks for your input.

In that price range, you should be fine filling 90% of holes by attending coin shows. Once you get to the early coppers and the Seated and Trade Dollars you might need some help.

Reeded Edge is great to work with. Robbie (Shortgapbob) is a member of the boards here. I have dealt with Rob and Robbie for many years and I trust them 1000%! You can view their website at: Reeded Edge Website They are at all major shows and many local shows.

I prefer shows and shops for that type of project. I like to look at the coins - in hand - before making the purchase. Of course, where I live now, there are no shows or shops. So, I depend on trusted board members and often the BST... Cheers, RickO
