CONA Show Report-Pics from Todd-CAC Submission

I was able to move things around and work from home today so I could hit the show when it opened today during an early lunch. Got there just before 10am and there were a good 30 or so folks already waiting to get in. I went to this show the first time about 10 years ago and have been 4 of the last six years.

The venue is reasonable and easy to get to with free parking. The weather here has been hot and humid but was very nice today which really made the heat of the venue noticeable. After about 45 minutes inside I was sweating. I am sure the Mt Dew I chugged before going in didn't help.

Anyhow, I have gone more on Saturday than Friday but the show is less busy than it was 4 years ago and more so when compared to 10 years ago. It seems to be the dealers and attendees are down, with the dealers selling raw or self slabbed coins slowly replacing dealers with large TPG inventory.

Had some dupes that I had accumulated and was going to sell on the bay, but took them in to Reeded Edge and sold them quickly. I had reviewed Reeded's site befoer the show so I knew there was nothing I needed there so I ventured around and saw some good material in my areas, but most were items I already had or beyond my current budget limitations. I have slowly been trying to complete my Morgan New Orleans set and was able to find an 1880 ) in MS 63 CAC with just a bit of pretty toning and bought it. The friend I was with was looking for currency and there were only 2 or 3 dealers who had any so his visit was a bust as they did not have anything in his area.

Took me just shy of 2 hours to take care of the things I had planned, and I would expect the show to be a good bit busier tomorrow. I hope it is another success since I don't get to many shows and would hate to lose the opportunity.

I had sent another box of coins to Todd Pollock and got them back at the PO on the way home from the show. Here are a couple of pics:

I had also sent in a group of 15 coins to CAC. I have been studying my results from previous submissions and have been buying my coins from ebay with a certain strategy of late. I ended up getting 11 of 15 coins to CAC with one of them being Gold.

1. 1938 Small Cent Lincoln, Wheat Rev PCGS MS66RD 80816368 Passed 1
2. 1937 Nickel Buffalo Type 2 PCGS MS66 72625726 Passed 1
3. 1938-D Nickel Buffalo Type 2 Buffalo PCGS MS66 80816369 Passed 1
4. 1926 Dime Mercury PCGS MS65FB 80816370 Not CAC 1
5. 1936 Dime Mercury PCGS MS66FB 33961019 Passed 1
6. 1936-S Dime Mercury PCGS MS66FB 29675945 Passed 1
7. 1938-D Dime Mercury PCGS MS66FB 1450979 Passed 1
8. 1942-D Dime Mercury NGC MS66FB 50634715 Exceeded 1
9. 1945-D Dime Mercury PCGS MS66FB 14245461 Passed 1
10. 1945-S Dime Mercury PCGS MS65FB 7911309 Not CAC 1
11. 1942 Half Dollars Walking Liberty PCGS MS66 80816372 Passed 1
12. 1946-S Half Dollars Walking Liberty NGC MS66 18377312 Passed 1
13. 1960 Half Dollars Franklin PCGS MS65FL 7625980 Not CAC 1
14. 1888-O Dollars Morgan PCGS MS65+ 80816374 Not CAC 1
15. 1884-CC Dollars Morgan PCGS MS63PL 80816373 Passed 1

I thought the 1926 Merc would CAC, but I suspected the 1888 Morgan would not since it did not CAC when it was in a MS65 holder previously. The 45 S and 45 D Mercs were purchased years ago when I started collecting and I figured they were a 50/50 toss up. 9 of the remaining coins were all purchased in the last 3 or 4 months with the benefit of my expanded education and they all got stickered so I am happy. I did strongly suspect the 1938 D Merc would Gold CAC, and was thinking the 42D Merc had a decent shot at a Green, so I was surprised by both of these. The 84 CC Morgan was just something I bought because I liked it and I don't collect these. Was in a old ANACs holder as MS64 PL and got downgraded on crossing to PCGS.

All in all a fun week, and my friend and I talked about what next larger show we would go to. Mostly we decide based on the food that we can get there. Blue crab in Baltimore seemed to be the contender.

Great looking group of coins and great pics by Todd. I'm drooling over the 27-D Peace. When I buy my first slabbed Peace dollar, I'm hoping it will have the look and strike of yours. Congrats!

Nice grouping! I just now learned CAC will tag Franklin halves. I wasn't aware.

    Your gold commemoratives are outstanding!

Outstanding 27-D. Very nice with just a skiff of appropriate patina. A gem 27-S is no slouch either.

You know, when I buy a coin I need for a set and it is in NGC I will break it out and cross it because I like my sets in PCGS. But then I find duplicates in NGC that I really love and want them just because they are cool and those stay in NGC.

Kaz: What does CONA stand for, and where is the show held?

This does seem to be a fair question.
