If the mint wants to do something really cool they could use what they found to create a 2021 Peace dollar commemorative. I'd buy that even if they made it of unobtanium.0

So no 1964 Morgan dollar coin was found. Galvanos, hubs, and master dies, yes. But no working dies or coins.

Wow.
The US Mint should hire me to make some from those galvanos/hubs/dies.
If they were struck over genuine coins, that might allow the Mint to make them without requiring Congressional approval (since they would only be altering coins that were already issued with the same design, and not issuing entirely new coins which requires an act of Congress).

They could make a set in 2021 which includes 2021-dated Morgan & Peace dollars, plus 1964-dated Morgan & Peace Dollars struck from those original dies. They could probably sell 100,000+ of those sets.

Based on the photos of the galvano, the mint did a great job of making it look like a modern-day Chinese counterfeit. You Suck! Well, you know what the mint would really do:
- Set the date to the current date, because that's all they are legally allowed to do.
- Muck with the design until it's "sort of like" a Morgan dollar.
- Strike it in proof only gold, for a price that only 5% of collectors will pay.
In short....they'd do what they did with the Merc dime and SLQ quarter. Fans of the original Morgan will go, "Eh".....

That is exactly what I was thinking.
Gasparro had his moments, but he is not among the Mint's better sculptors/engravers.

How about a 2021 4 Coin Set for the 100th anniversary of the end of the Morgan Dollar and beginning of the Peace Dollar?
2021 Morgan - Business Strike and Cameo Proof
2021 Peace - Business Strike and Matte Proof
Price - $229.99 a set, HHL of 2, mintage of 100K
Real dollars, not medals or dual dated commems. Perhaps make them .999 to help with the legislation?
I can dream can't I?
US Mint - If you're reading, that's $23M gross on one product! (you're welcome)0 -

dcarr:But I had not ever considered a "1964" Morgan.
The time is now to consider,Mr. Carr.
"Two things are infinite: human stupidity and the universe; and I'm not sure about the universe."
-Albert Einstein-Mistakes are natural. But repeated mistakes without reflection are something else. That may be the “stupidity” he was referring to. In research, he admitted uncertainty openly. “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” This shows humility. Even a Nobel laureate accepted doubt. That humility makes the quote less cynical and more observational.

Yes they should, and make a documentary about the Morgan history and then you making these dollars, including the entire process.
You do not get enough credit for the artist that you are, at least around here.0 -

The time is now to consider,Mr. Carr.
Which is why I suggested a 1965 to him. But, like a true artist, he follows his own path instead of what's "trendy". I both love and hate that about him.
That said, he might move his 1920 Morgan to the head of the line now

Absolutely agree with this. Have no idea what the legal requirements would be to get it done.

Did anyone ever consider that since both Morgan and Peace dollars circulated during the early 1960's, that the US Mint may have come up with a novel idea of issuing 1964-D Peace Dollars from Denver AND 1964 Morgan Dollars from Philadelphia??? Maybe the plan to mint 1964 Philly Morgans was scrapped after the 1962-1964 Treasury release of $1000.00 Morgan bags satisfied demand in the eastern part of the country.0

The Treasury thought that a mere 45,000,000 coins of either design would be hoarded because of the perceived low mintage, so it was always going to be one design from one mint.Professional Numismatist, Retired. 55 year member ANA. Actually, demand for silver dollars (of any design) increased as Treasury stocks were depleted, which is why an additional mintage was proposed. By 1964-65 the price of silver had risen to the point that silver dollars were worth face value. I doubt that collector preferences had any influence on which design to adopt, since anti-collector sentiment was running high in Washington at the time (hence the elimination of mintmarks and the discontinuance of proof sets).
I never understood (and still don't) why they didn't strike 1965 Peace dollars in 40% silver. Those would have actually circulated.

Check out the separate thread from one of the four horsemen (Q. David Bowers, John Dannreuther, David Sundman and Dennis Tucker .."Dentuck") who actually saw the source of the photo shown in OP's original posted link. Suffice it to say, what you see isn't what you think you see.
The thread is titled, "The 1964 Morgan Dollar Discovery."0 -

PS: You can get that verdigris off the "5" using photo-shop
Also, check the reverse hub type. If it is a C3, or if it has a micro-o, then you have one of the 1902-O "privately-made" vintage counterfeits.

I considered that, but I'm afraid it might interrupt the Monster Natural Rainbow Toning that the coin has somehow acquired since I took the picture three days ago.

Nope, it's genuine. I know because a cousin says he inherited it from his grandfather, who bought it at a bargain price during a trip to the far east and had it authenticated by the guy who sold it to him.

Hey Daniel...let's put on hold your plan to release overstruck 1964 Morgans, okay?
Lance.
I have considered a "1920" fantasy-date over-strike Morgan Dollar.
But I had not ever considered a "1964" Morgan.
A 2021-D Morgan will be fun in a few years though... overstruck on a 1921-D Morgan of course.
Neat idea. I was already planning to do pieces for the centennial of the last Morgan and the first Peace dollars. I had in mind to use this format, but in a 50mm 2-troy-oz size:
Those three pieces are true works of art. A two ounce version with replicas of the Morgan and Peace dollar designs would be fantastic! I want several of each!

Yes, the designs are works of art. It would have been nice if credit had been given to the actual artists.
