Jefferson Nickel Variety Of The Week: 1943-P DDO FS-103
This is one of the new varieties added to the Cherry Pickers Guide this year. This variety was not on my radar screen as one deserving of a coveted spot in the Guide. Now that it has, I cannot deny how cool it is and it's apparent rarity at this present time! There are only 2 examples graded by PCGS; an AU55 and an AU58.
I've looked at a ton of Jeffersons over the years and have only found this one example. Amazingly, I still remember buying it. I was working in Chicago back in the mid-90s and took a lunch break and hit a Jewelery/Coin shop downtown in the Loop. The associate had to go digging in the back just to find the few Jeffersons they had. This coin was in the few they had and almost didn't buy it, as it was not uncirculated! Obvioulsy I did along with a couple other so-so nickels to make up for the time the Associate spent looking for them! All those years later and all those Jefferson Nickels I've looked at, this one gets to grace my PCGS Registry Set! Needless to say........I'm still looking and now looking for that first MS example!
