Is this a bad dip or PVC?

MorganMan94MorganMan94 Posts: 1,331 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hello everyone,

So I bought this 1922 Peace dollar on auction and when I looked at it I immediately noticed this. I didn't view it before the auction as I didn't plan on buying it. It is really noticeable when you start adjusting it at different angles. I am wondering if anyone knows if this is PVC or just a bad dip? I haven't owned anything like this before.

I can't get photos to load so here is the link:

One good reason to always dip coins in acetone before sending in.

Could be entirely natural. Peace dollars can look pretty strange at times, especially with thin-layer toning viewed at an angle. It's hard (for me) to be sure without looking in-hand. Whatever it is, it probably isn't helping in the eye-appeal department.

It doesn't look like PVC to me. Not pretty, though.

I am certain that is not natural, no way.

I originally thought it was dipped and then submitted and maybe happened over time, but my friend thinks it is PVC.

I think it is dipped due to the reverse having some odd red coloring as well as some black spots on the Eagle, which it looks like it took most of it off.

Looks like improper rinse residue to me, but it's um, well, it's...."aesthetically challenged"

I didn't intend on buying it at the auction so I bought it sight unseen and just took a chance. Not my best purchase I will admit..

Sight unseen isn't all bad, but obviously there's enough of it to go around to remember our Latin. Caveat Emptor.

Nuts, I know- I like to collect the ugliest (PCGS) Peace dollars out there. It is shocking how this series offers up a world of truly beastly looking coins.
My only caveat is the coin must be gradable and not in a genuine only slab.

    Yours certainly qualifies!

Whoever sold that to you, without saying something about the look, should be slapped hard!

It's not a pricey coin. What, $50? Certainly not worth having professionally conserved.

If it were mine I'd crack it and give it an acetone bath. If that didn't do the job I'd dip it with eZest.

Not much to lose. Maybe you can rescue it.

And FWIW, I too think it's PVC.

I have to ask one question: Doe the reverse picture in green or yellow actually reflect the color of the coin?

It was from an auction the op attended, and 99% of auctioneers don't say anything about issues that may be on the coin being sold. They leave it up to the bidder to know what they are looking at.

It looks white with some green showing straight on from a distance, but when holding at an angle all the green is definitely noticeable.

I took it to a dealer today and they think it is PVC as well. He offered to buy it as a training piece for novice collectors to show people to buy the coin and not the holder, but I decided I came home with it for some odd reason..

if you smell it, perhaps you can detect the odor of wet slip covers=PVC

    then try acetone, then dip.
