From what I have read, the public usually socks away a couple each of the "first year of issue" (except the Type II) of each denomination...so probably lots!

Lots of type I Buffs exist in uncirculated. That's a good thing since prices stay low when there's lots of nice survivors around.

The art takes precedence over the dollars. The appreciative collector who focuses on the art of coins rather than the dollars they bring is the king.Extreme rarity and its always attendant high prices take a back seat for collectors of coins like type I Buffalo Nickels.

1913 Type I Buffalo Nickels in uncirculated condition are a good thing.

Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.

I saw the remnants of a recently acquired original roll of T1's at our local show about 3 years ago.
The dealer bought it from the estate of a deceased banker who had acquired the roll in the 1930's.
No toners, but they sure had booming luster - and the best ones had already been cherry picked and sent in
    for grading.

So if you want one, but you don't want the same one that everyone else has, what do you look for that would differentiate yours from the herd?

    I wonder...
