Edited to add....maybe on QC from PCGS to ngc. ngc allows more on color, which is GOOD!

The only thing that I suppose might happen is the first grader mistook die polish for cleaning?
Why would you? Crack it out and send it. The worst that can happen is it is back in a details slab again. No reason to influence the graders with that negative thought.

Totally agree!

I'll soon be attempting to try for a straight grade at NGC for a hammered medieval gold coin I have in a PCGS "XF details/Filed rims" holder. Not only is the filing not apparent to my eyes, but a certain amount of clipping and shaving of edges are par for the course with thin medieval hammered pieces. If there is any filing on this 15th century florin, I consider it to be within acceptable parameters.
But we'll see what NGC says in due time. I will crack it out before submission, though.
Regardless of the holder or label, I like the coin for its history and superior toning. Figured it's worth one try at NGC for a second opinion.

If it was all the same ie. grade on slab being crossed not influencing new grade, then it would be preferred, right?
My method for cracking out is not completely safe from harm being done to the coin so it would be nice to not have to do this, especially because the coin is very expensive and it is soft being that it is gold.

If the competitor saw a problem with the coin, there is no chance PCGS is going to take a chance without looking at the coin in hand, outside of the holder. If you can't crack a coin out without damaging it "further", find someone who can. It is quite easy.

Subsequently, I cracked it again and PCGS put it (back) in a problem slab...

The worst case is to return "cannot authenticate." Unfortunately, this occurs on me twice already. I have to put them back to other TPG holders before I could cross them. Is this sad?

I understand what you have been saying. My question was not asking for advice on what to do with my coin. I was just curious if anyone tried to do like I stated in my op and had success.

Send it in. Please post the results so I can laugh.

Once again you are not posting anything relevant to my original question. You have been most helpful. You should be proud

Your question is: "I am thinking of sending in a problem coin in a problem slab and hoping it returns problem free." As foolish of a question as that is/was, everyone here tried their darndest to talk you out of it, only to have you talk smack. Since you don't like the answer, send it in.

Your reading comprehension skills suck. My original question was a simple survey of other's experiences. I appreciate people trying to warn me if I was going to take this action on one of my coins but that is not what I was going for. Everyone but you was helpful. You on the other hand were a condescending donkey.
Anyway,
Please leave my thread and go brighten up someone else's
Sure sounds like you are planning on sending it in to me.
Let's make a deal. You send it in for crossover and if it crosses problem free from the problem holder, I'll double the fee and send it to you. If it does not, you take the same amount and flush it down the toilet. It might leave an impression for the next time you think of doing this.
For myself, I have had many no grade submission returns that I cracked out and resubmitted only to come back in a no problem holder. I currently have a coin that I will not identify specifically that is details graded but that is a fantastic, old and valuable condition census world coin of a type that came with terrible planchets. It is wonderful for what it is and I think it belongs in a no problem holder. Yes, it was probably lightly cleaned but it is in better condition than 99.9% of all others of the type. If I simply crack and re-submit, because it is in a secure plus holder, I feel it will details grade again. I think my only option is to make my case directly to PCGS to put it in a no problem holder. I'm not sure I'll fare any better though.
However, this coin could present a case for submission of a details graded coin in the slab with a request for a no problem grade. For now, I've done nothing. Maybe I should crack it out and send it to NGC hoping for a straight grade, and then send it in for crossover.
Or maybe it just is what it is and I should leave it alone.

I also had a proof Barber coin go from PR63 (1989 era OGH) to Genuine 98 to PR64 CAM, all at PCGS. Different graders on different days? I thought enough of it to crack it out and try for an upgrade, so imagine my surprise when it came back Genuine 98- cleaned the first time. The second time, it turned into a PR64 CAM, and it barely made cameo, so I got an optimistic grade that time around. I recall that the submission that yielded the Genuine 98 grade was my worst ever, with every last coin being undergraded or bagged. Must have been a bad day in Newport Beach.
These are all beautiful stories, and I have many of the same. You certainly would not send the coins for a "crossover" in a problem holder. You would crack it, like everyone did.
If I submit it as a cross:
- The fee is large due to the guarantee premium.
- PCGS knows coming in that the coin is genuine. If they don't like it, they return it in the holder, no harm, no foul (other than fees).
If I crack it out and submit:
- What is the risk that it comes back counterfeit? I would hope none, as it is a well documented specimen, but stranger things have happened.
- What is the risk that PCGS decides that it needs a long period of time to have an expert review and opine to verify its genuine?
- Based on the value, the pricing is essentially the same as a crossover.
What do I do? I hate to pay the fees, but they are what they are, and that's what happens when you swim in the deep end. Ultimately, it will be submitted as a crossover, as that makes the most sense.
While I don't know the specifics of your coin, hopefully I have outlined at least one case where it makes sense to cross a details holder. I did the same thing years ago with an 1876 cc 20c in XF details. If my coin were a close call to a straight grade, I might crack it and take my chances. With your concern of damaging the coin, it would make the most sense to submit and crossover. I wish you the best with your decision.

No. Only a fool would do this. There is absolutely no upside to trying to cross a "details" coin in its bodybag slab.

Thank you for the help. I was wondering if the board had this feature and I am going to set it up now
Now we just have to hope people don't quote his posts very often
