Has anyone else noticed the mid grade commems moving, higher grades not so much?

So I have been perusing all of the Dealer sites known for selling the classics, and frankly they seem to be moving a lot of 64's thru 66's while not so many 67's and 68's. I'm basing that on the number of hold/sold signs I see when I visit the sites. Anyone else seeing this or am I biased because I am looking for the mid grade examples?

I haven't noticed that much. I got this MS66 Beauty for under $150 on eBay last week. A few years ago I bet this coin could have gone for twice that.

It seems like the whole series is financially dead to me. I bought a PBS produced DVD about the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. It was wonderful, and I got out my Jefferson and McKinley gold dollars to enjoy it. Then I looked at the Gray a Sheet bids and was shocked. Those coins have lost almost half their value since I bought them only a few years ago.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Commem's at these grades and price levels are the easiest and cheapest for collectors to purchase.

Trying for upgrades in the future?

I try and purchase these coins at the grade just below the big price jumps.

The commem market is alive and well at these new price levels in MS63-67.

At MS68 there's far less players left and those still active already have most coins they need.

I agree with Broadstruck. Sums up my view.

While accurate for this series, I smiled at the idea that an MS-66 was a "mid-grade."

Pops in high grades have suddenly grown so rapidly that a lot of collectors have lost the will to pay up for these coins. image

Mid grade is F-VF for me. Really low commems are just not showing up like they use to

I should really, really be building a MS65/MS66 set at these prices. MS66 coins for some of these aren't going for much more than the 65s. I just need a theme-- all rattlers, all CAC, all toned, etc, to make it a little more special than an average MS65 set.
