The passing of a numismatic giant. I was just reading Bob Lemke's history of Krause Publications last weekend. Now I'll get my copy of Chet's autobiography down from the shelf and re-read that. He was a very inspirational figure among numismatic writers, journalists, and publishers --- as well as the hobby community at large. Rest in peace!

While many of the posts here are about Chet and his impact to the hobby, I was fortunate to first learn of Chet in a different way. I am originally from Iola, Wi and grew up there. As a kid in the 70’s, the impact of Chet to the community of Iola was immense. There were certainly his financial donations to many causes, but it was more than that, it was also his service, dedication and love to the community of Iola that made Chet bigger than life to most.

Back around 1975 or so, I was pursuing my coin collecting merit badge in Boy Scouts and got to tour Krause Publications. This was before they moved to their current location. If I recall, it would have been near what was known at the Lakeview Tavern near downtown Iola. Chet came out to introduce himself to me. He was just that kind of guy.

He was also a speaker at my High School graduation. I unfortunately never knew him personally as I moved away from Iola over 30 years ago. But despite that, I can certainly say that he had an impact on me, as I am sure he did with so many others. He will be missed by the hobby and the town of Iola.

Here is some more info about Chet Krause

    THE NUMISMATIST • AUGUST 2010

    FOND FAREWELL

    Krause Resigns from ANA Board

Chester L. Krause of Iola, Wisconsin, has resigned from the American

Numismatic Association Board of Governors, a position he has held since

August 2007. In a July 7 letter to ANA President Clifford Mishler, Krause

explained that health reasons precluded his attendance at the Board of

Governors meetings in Orlando, Florida, in January and in Ft. Worth, Texas,

    in March.

“Although I feel in generally good health, it has become increasingly difficult

for me to travel,” he explained. “Consequently, I don’t feel I can serve

the Board or the ANA membership to the fullest extent. I think it is proper

for me to step aside sooner than later. It has been my pleasure to serve . . .

    during the last three years.”

Krause will be replaced by former ANA governor Alan Herbert of Belle

Fourche, South Dakota. In accordance with Association bylaws, any vacancy

on the Board of Governors is offered to the person who failed to be elected

as governor by the least number of votes in the most recent election.

One of the giants of numismatics ...

I honestly didn't know that he was that old. I met years ago at a dinner, and he was a really nice man.

    RIP, sir.

    A giant in MANY fields.

An absolute genius in recognizing trends and opportunities.

Krause Publications was formed in 1952 when founder, Chester Krause, rolled out the first issue of the cornerstone Numismatic News publication, which today continues to have a strong presence in the coin-collecting hobby.

Twenty years later, an 800-page Standard Catalog of World Coins made it's debut and the rest...is history. In the nearly 35 years since that massive catalog rolled off the press, our list has grown from just one title to more than 750 titles in print.

We pride ourselves in supplying collectors and hobbyists with the information and instruction they need to enjoy their hobby even more.

There's something for everyone from antique collectors to comic book collectors, old cars fans, hunters and shooters, sewers and quilts, coin collectors and more.

Enjoyed knowing Chet for nearly 50 years. Truly a dedicated numismatist, both as a collector and spokesman. Absolutely a gentleman.

    RIP, Chet.

I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

Way back when always enjoyed my weekly NN. My favorite was Alan Herbert's "Odd Corner". So Mr. Krauses passing jogged the memory of that.
