Wow, did PCGS whiff on attributing these Buffalo varieties?

You can bet I will be seeking reconsideration on these two 1916-D 3-1/2 leggers. I know it's been busy there and these are new CPG listings, and I'm not complaining about the grades. But I sent in three of this variety and I figured 2 were locks.
Instead, I got 1 out of 3
The first one pictured graded AU-58, which would tie for finest graded, and the second one got an AU details because of an obverse scratch. Could have lived with that, but not the missed attribution.
The one that passed muster got an AU-53, which was sweet since I picked it off eBay from someone who gets a lot of bad ink on these boards for less than $30. Actually, all were cherrypicks.
My question is because they were sent in by a dealer friend who only submits occasionally, can I get the reconsideration myself or do I have to go through my friend, who is willing to do it, but not until he has more coins to send.
On the positive side, my 1930 5-leg Buff graded MS-62and my 1917-D 3-1/2 legger came back VF-35.
And yes, I did fill out the form for variety attribution and was charged for it.

It can really be tough to know where to draw the line on this date. The first one is a nice LDS example of the variety and should slab as such. The second one is borderline. I suggest in my book that only those that have an obviously weak leg (as pictured therein) should be considered but that still comes back to my original point.

I sent in this 1916-d 3 1/2 leg twice to PCGS with attribution and they wouldn't attribute it:

I think you have even a bigger complaint than I do.

I can relate. I've sent several gem-grade 1945 Missing "AW" half dollars to PCGS seeking attribution and was denied each time. It's one of those "hard-to-draw-the-line" die state varieties, like your Buffaloes.

I eventually gave up, but that doesn't mean you should.

Has dissatisfaction been expressed with PCGS customer service? Much difficulty can be avoided by first contacting customer service.

It's possible that PCGS simply doesn't want to buy into this 3-1/2 legged Buffalo craze that is sweeping the nation.

I don't know about this variety (FS-901), but I would contact CS to discuss options for a "second look" if you feel that it was overlooked.

The 1916-d should be called a 3.65 legged variety.
    then all would be well.

In most 18th to 20th century coin series those are just called weak strikes. I eagerly await the day when on seated coins Miss Liberty is attributed by the percentage of her foot showing.

As we have discussed many times, grading is an opinion with no true standards. Thus you have situations such as this. In the end, even if you get attribution, it will only be an opinion...yes, it is the one you want, but in reality, nothing more than an opinion on a label which, when reviewed by others will just as often get disagreement. Cheers, RickO
