Do you think those with the top sets have multiples in the top grades?

I'm sure that there are a few but I believe it to be the exception rather than the rule.

When putting together a set, a collector will always find better examples. And many times the dupes have greater eye appeal than the higher graded coins.

Ha - what a coincidence! I just yesterday decided that if I saw a great seated dollar that I'd buy it even if I already had an example. This was brought on by finally seeing the MS64 1855 and thinking that it's just as nice or nicer than the 64+ in my set.

Eliasberg owned the 2 finest 1859-s halves....both MS68's. Far better than the next best.

He also owned the 2 finest 1872-s halves....both MS66/67.

Eugene Gardner had numerous instances where he owned 2-3 examples of tougher date seated quarters...all in or near the condition census. 3 - 1857-0, 3 - 1858-0, 2- 1862-s, 3 gem 1858 Philly, 2 - gem 1868, 2 gem 1871-s, etc.

Doug, I know a few folks who have many dupes, but lack the time and will power to simply off load them.

I'm with you there friend. For what you and I like, Great Collections is a very easy way to offload dupes. Ian has treated me right for years. I like to "reinvest" in coins I don't have in the Lincoln varieties area. Funny how I feel about other series. I can't get into all the other esoteric varieties of the Indians. I have only collected the major varieties. Then on FE's I went bonkers and have pretty much every collectible variety. I will say I am having a lot of fun though.
