Are you sure these were made from genuine coins? I have seen several of these "buttons" that look like these and they were all made from nice reproductions.

I also wonder if these are real since there has been a huge influx of Oregon Trail and Buffalo nickel counterfeits added to the market, and even available conveniently online, in the last few years aimed directly at this market.

I have seen "replica" versions as well fashioned into these buttons...they are nice nevertheless and would accentuate your horse's bridle very well.

Those "buffalo nickels" have the same marks on the rim (about 12 o'clock) and a "J or L" in front of the lip of the Indian...coincidence? Same goes for the "Oregon Commems", half a dozen pits on the obverse rim (12 o'clock) and the same pit on the robe above the bow.

Now I'm not sure if genuine however, they will look nice on the harness, $50 paid for them so no big lose if not real

I was being polite before, but these are definitely modern counterfeits. All of the Buffalo fakes have the same imperfection near the obverse rim at 3:00 to 4:00 while both Oregon Trail fakes have the same blobs on the reverse near IGWT.

Most of these are reproductions. We have a yearly fair here - called the Garlic Festival - and there are a couple of booths with coin jewelry. They both became indignant when I pointed out they were using counterfeit coins rather than authentic nickels, quarters etc. They asked me to leave after I showed them the pick up points....several by standers then snickered and left with me. Cheers, RickO
