Peace Dollar Low ball help

YorkshiremanYorkshireman Posts: 4,585 ✭✭✭✭✭
I recently submitted two really weak Peace dollars hoping for a "1" grade to offer to a lowball collector for their registry set.

One got graded as a "2" and the other had a date so weak that it did not get graded.

What should I do now?

Stop wasting money on "lowball" submissions.

A weak date would not justify a "no grade" or "details" moniker...there had to be something else. From what I remember, a P01 had to be identifiable by Type, date and mintmark and be problem free (no cleaning or other damage) to receive a P01.

"At PCGS, a coin assigned a grade of Poor 1 is a coin that has most of the design and date missing due to excessive wear from circulation. However, in most cases the coin has to be identifiable by its date, mint mark and type before PCGS assigns it a grade of Poor 1.

Not only do some coins in grades of Poor 1 command higher premiums than in most other grades. Numerous times collectors have sent in coins graded PCGS Fair 2 under a grade review, in hopes of getting their coin downgraded to a grade of Poor 1.

Perhaps coins in grades of Poor 1 are much more desirable because they circulated heavily, and therefore have much more historical significance. Or, it can be because this is the lowest grade possible and it’s really hard to find a coin in this one specific grade. Is it because it takes just a bit more wear before it becomes un-greadable. Or, is it because of the Set Registry and several collectors want to compete in Low Ball sets? Or it may be because collecting Low Ball coins is really fun.

Whatever the reason is, its fun to see Low Ball coins attract this much attention in the marketplace."

You still may have had success What is the PO 01 population of the FA02 coin? If Fair 2 is the lowest for the year/mm then you still may have something to offer the lowball collectors.

As one learns more about "PO01's," one eventually understands there is a "fine line between and FR02 and a no grade." Peace dollars in particular are difficult (other than a '21) to get in a PO01 holder. Here is an article last year in NN about PO01s.

A goal I have never understood...but then, there really is no logic to most collecting. Cheers, RickO

When it comes to 1923 Peace dollars. there are 2 graded "1"s with 8 "2"s.

So I hope there will be some demand for this coin.

It certainly is in the (bad) condition census.

Just think! Of the 200,000 PCGS graded 1923 Peace dollars, this is one of the 10 (worst) best.

Remarkable!! What a great addition to somebody's registry set.

I will try to post photos.

Just randomly write in a date in the Peace dollar range with a sharpie. Good to go.

Collecting lowball coins is just another avenue that makes collecting coins fun. To each his own.

Chase after the lowest and you're bound to hit bottom.

With a pop of 8 with only 2 lower, how should it be priced?

Look at the Lowball Peace dollar registry set and send them a pm if they don't have the one you have

While I did look at the sets, I didn't think to PM owners. Thanks!

Common date PCGS FR02 Peace Dollars are worth about $30. PO01 about double that.
