I thought this was a pretty good submission... except!

LanLordLanLord Posts: 11,723 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well, overall I thought I did pretty decent on this submission.

My biggest concern is that I hope I still get a blue box! image

Except for this abortion. I'm going to have to really look close at it, because it looked

pretty nice to me. Maybe my eyes are just failing me. It's still a really pretty shield

nickel.

Yeah, but the pics aren't good, probably not good enough to determine what's up with it.

    but here it is:

Sorry if the pics are monster big.

BTW, this coin received a new coin variety from HowardS for the year type.

It is a Shield Nickel Variety S2-3040

    I was hoping for better.

I'm not sure what they didn't like, it's not like the cracks are all smoothed over like it was worked on, it is a pretty clean coin the cracks are sharp edged every where.

Howard (I believe) mentioned that a lot of times the dies were unfinished by the mint and ended up showing buildup of metal in some places, I'm thinking that is what they thought might be whizzing.

Hard to tell from the pic, but it looks nice to me.

minor scratch should not have held it back. Rim repair somewhere?

I assume it really isn't gold plated image

No, not gold plated, my poor photo skills.

I think what you thought was a minor scratch is actually one of the major die cracks.

It was a pretty much shattered die. There are a lot of cracks on it. Not all of them show on the pics. The shield side has a nearly square crack that makes me wonder why the shield even remained on the die (or the edges didn't fall off).

BTW, the 7 is severely doubled.

Very nice submission and you need to resubmit that nickel.

What I can see that might qualify as damage is the obverse dig at 10 o'clock from the denticles to leaf, and some damage to the leaf at thend of the dig (bottom of outermost leaf is squared off and there is some indentation on top of the biggest leaf).

It's such a hammered strike that if it weren't for the cracks I'd be thinking maybe proof. It's an awfully nice coin for a no-grade.

BTW, the die didn't fall apart from the squared die crack (lower right quadrant) because the cracks aren't that deep (yet!).

This is an RPD 1 north 67 south (clockwise rotation).

I think, as Howards already said, you got a no-grade, because of the nasty scratch or dig at the 10:00 region on the obverse.

I'd like to see the 1885 Morgan when you get her back.

Great results overall, especially if you get the blue box. image

    Great submission. Congrats!

    Quite a Type variety. image

If any other Joe Shmoe put up that Nickel pic I'd say it looked polished.

I find it very hard to believe that the mentioned scratch DQ'd it.

They should declare the issue so there is no guessing.

has it been buffed or polished? I do not see luster.

Looks nice in those pictures... could be the 10 o'clock gouge that got the 98... Cheers, RickO

That is another crack, not a scratch. The picture doesn't do the coin justice.

Under 4x and 10x lenses there are no scratches, there are cracks a plenty.

I'll see if I can get a pic of the Morgan when it arrives. It's got awesome colour to it.

I bought it for the colour and then realized how clean the thing was and decided to send it in to get it graded. It had been in an album for about 10 years (that I know of), the colour makes me think it spent much more time before it found me.

They may have suspected a filed rim and the filing could not obscure the 10 o'clock area which may have been deeper.

    Nice coin

Is that damage at 3:00? It looks like something is happening on both sides.

It does to me. Maybe you are above such things. Your reply shows a stratification that sort of sucks.

The picture REALLY makes it look like a scratch. Definitely take a second look when it comes back. I've been wrong on my own coins before. Even if it is though, that's a harsh punishment.

I was mentally guessing $50. Surprised to see $300 for an AU. Carry on...
