When will repaired scratches be acceptable??

With the advances in precision lasers and 3-D/circuit board printing, when will it be possible to repair scratches on a coin to a degree acceptable to the grading services??

It will get there and some would say, since the scratch was not meant to be there, taking it off is OK.

Well, this coin collector owned a high end tattoo removal laser for 5 years and it's quite effective at removing spots on coins. Certain wavelengths focus on individual colors and ignore everything else, such as the color on the original coin. Same as removing tattoo pigment and leaving the skin intact. I think it's legit for spot removal restorations. With the right trial and error, the proper settings can be achieved for each type of metal. Who knows what other lasers are good for or what they're capable of but I'm open to the possibilities if it's appropriate. The word "laser" has become a tag word for deceptive coin doctoring and it's a shame as there is potential for real good to come from it.

For some reason I'm picturing someone playing around with a laser and say a VG Indian cent so there are no marks or blemishes,

only perfect surfaces on a really worn coin. LOL

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

Movement of metal is one of the reasons for NG / genuine - Code 98.

    FWIW Dept:

There are several techniques accepted by the TPG's today that were not accepted 20 -25 years ago. To name a few:

    'Dipping'

    Artificial toning

'Chocolatizing' copper proofs that had irregular toning

There is a major pattern coin that had a prominent staple scratch in its proof fields that has since been repaired and is now slabbed.

    - - - - - - - there are probably others.

When it is undetectable (such as many AT processes - yes, that people swear are NT)...then it will obviously be accepted.....and the individual that perfects the process will be able to make major profits....as will the TPG's as those coins go in for grading.... as will the owners if the upgrade is significant to the particular coin. Profit all around.... Cheers, RickO

So if a modern day klutz put a scratch on one of the Langbord 1933 double eagles, it's not ok to try to repair it, OR is it ok to repair it as long as you disclose the repair?

It would be nice to have a "scratch-away" feature, but there would be an ethical debate as to whether it is conservation or doctoring.

image That made me laugh. Sounds right.

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

A coin with a scratch gets net graded by a TPG. The coin is later cracked out and the scratch is expertly "repaired" and the coin is resubmitted to the same TPG. The coin is seen by two graders the first of whom "upgrades" it while the second grader remembers the coin as having been scratched. How should he grade it?

    +1 I agree as well.

Is there any reason to believe that it isn't going on right now?
