If you dread working with a client, and the thought of the next session with that person makes you irritated, fire that client
If you have a client that is a pain in the ass to work with, fire that client
If you have a chronically late client, fire that ciient
If you have a sexual harasser client, fire that client
If you have repeated trouble collecting money from a client, fire that client.
If the client is disrespectful to your team, fire that client.
If the client can't stop bad mouthing the other clients, then fire that client.
Your personal integrity, and the integrity of your business, is worth more than any pain in the ass, always late, always wanting special treatment, bad mouthing client ever will be.
When you dread going into your own business, because you fear dealing with a "that client", then you already know the answer.... fire the client.

    Of course, one must ask?

Why do all these bad clients share the same dealer/owner/whatever.

It is like the guy who has had 5 bad marriages with 5 bad wives,

    The common denominator is HIM.

Great advice, but seldom heeded. Cheers, RickO
  • I agree with the OP. Some of us small business types are (well-meaningly) afraid to turn down almost any client. But over time, patterns emerge.

I've never been able to fire clients, but I've had newly enacted regulations do it for me, and it's great! I get to save face, feign confusion, and promise to get re-certified really quickly. But the reality is that it has freed me up to find clients that are more in line with my business ethics.

And yes, many clients unite in their hatred of me. As an honest appraiser, I take it as a compliment. I am hated by SunTrust and Wells Fargo, and beloved by local credit unions and insurance investigators. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Being a human gives us certain power. The ability and the right to say "yes", or "no" and be on your merry way. Thank you.

    Haha, love that!

Its constant! Every collector knows more than us it seems like. When few do, which are the customers I love, they teach me what they know and what they are passionate for. Makes me a better dealer because I can supply a better product.

As for "firing a client" Ive not had to yet, but there are a few who I would rather not see come in the front door.

New clients are the best! Always eager to do their part and match the graciousness of the deal. Past clients tend to feel you owe them for having bought something and this typically shows up as expected lower rates and missed appointments. For these I just get too busy. If your awesome I part the seas for you.

Knowing what this is like as a business owner I never pull that stuff on others when I'm hiring pros and pay them their rates, and I don't go luxury item shopping unless I'm flush.
