Got my overstrikes. Favorite? That would be the 1915 half and then the 1915 Type I SLQ. The merc is OK, with FULL BANDS but just not as impressive. Still nice coins to pull up and look at....
Love that Milled British (1830-1960) Well, just Love coins, period.
I like dcarr's technical skill and I have to give major props to how clever his overstrike program is. He took a concept that was already well-known (overstrikes) and modified it in a way I at least had never hear of before and which I suspect is totally new: complete and total overstrike of both sides of an authentic host coin (three sides if you include the rims). Neither adding nor subtracting material. Creating coins the mint could have made, on equipment the mint actually used, on actual mint pieces. And he stayed inside the law.
The mint's own recent unsatisfying repurposed designs (2016 Merc, 2006 San Fran mint dollar) illustrate how well executed dcarr's overstrikes are. In my opinion, they are better than most of the mint's own attempts. It shows he's got his finger on the pulse of what we coin collectors want to see more than the mint does.
Even with the minor, intentional alterations dcarr makes on his overstrikes, his interpretations somehow ring more true than the mint's own attempts at reviving classic designs. From hobbyists who notice every spec on a surface, every missing serif on a millimeter-wide letter, that says something.
FWIW: my infamous fatty cac'd 1964 is one of his first overstrikes:
We are like children who look at print and see a serpent in the last letter but one, and a sword in the last. --Severian the Lame
I thought that added to the authenticity of the fantasy
So many of us love the older slabs. The fatty slab meant it had been seen in the golden age of slabbing. The gold cac meant it had been seen again in the modern era of slabbing, and that JA had approved of it and its quality.
Those passing and somewhat arbitrarily desirable qualities (fatty slab, gold bean) pale in comparison to the unicorn of a '64 peace dollar. But we still pick up on them. If it and the montage image braddick posted of it with other older slabs makes anyone smile or think "that's cool", then I'm happy

Nice ! That set is one of my favorites. Yes, it was somewhat pricey. But my purpose wasn't to make money on it. The purpose was to refine and showcase my favorite designs of 2007-2015. Making that set required sculptural refinements and the engraving, hardening, and polishing of ten dies (nine obverses, one reverse). And there were also nine different production runs with different coin press adjustments for each. All that, just to produce 36 sets.

I took a run at this bar and got out bid by a bidder with 0 feedback. Is there really that much of a following for these? Low mintage?
I saw that one, thought on bidding myself but thought it looked really suspect. The center detail of the obverse looked real soft, as it the light earth details were completely lost on a second generation transfer of some type. The reverse date and denom punches didn't look like the ones on the Carr bars I own. Maybe it's good, maybe not, but suspect by me none the less so I passed.
Now that I see it went for $202.00 I see that I wasn't the only one as I would expect a five oz to go for at lest 400 on eBay.
I hope Dan makes another run of these in odd numbers! Think 2.5, 3, 4 etc!!! Just buy them from him if you can.

That is a legitimate (genuine) "Carr Bar". The 5-oz version was stamped on hand-poured (irregular) bars. Small pockmarks etc are normal. Prior to 2015, the date and denomination counter-stamps were in a smaller font like that. This one is the earlier "Moonlight Refinery" obverse. Later issues have a "Clark Gruber" obverse. I might make some more Moonlight Refinery bars at some point in the future, using a new die (and with new/current dates).

There's May, 2012, I think this is the first offered by DC, a one oz'er, I have a 5 oz 05/12 in the SDB, I'm pretty sure. I sold a 2012 DC five oz'er at cost a while ago. Seemed to not be going anywhere, price wise, so I sold it. Is a DC 2012 5 oz'er worth anything? Silver price was strong then, not so much now.
Edit - I've never been sure whether the globe is a depiction of the earth, or, not. I'm going not.
Dan notified me that my two SLQ's ( Ty 1 & Ty 2 ) have been shipped. These will immediately go into an old National Album I have just for Quarters. There's a 1931-S waiting patiently as well.
I also have a great looking 1916 Half in an National Album as well. There was one empty spot after 1915-S....it's the perfect fill in coin.
Say what you will about these erroneous dates - I enjoy them - and I have no intentions of selling them.
Just a suggestion, but a 1793 Silver Dollar would certainly be a hit !! It could be tied in with a 1793 Half Disme, Disme, Quarter and Half Dollar. My mouth's watering as I think about this....

The coins being over-struck often shed small particles of silver. That is a small struck-through piece.
If there are a bunch of them on a coin, or if any are fairly large, the coin is converted to the "bulk-handled" category (or scrapped and melted if really bad).
The "high-grade" pieces will generally have a small flaw or two (that is why I label them conservatively as "MS-65" grade).
Received my 'Octagon Owls' a few minutes ago, Very Nice!
They were shipped a day earlier than my over strikes, (arrived Saturday) however package was in a 'loop' in an adjacent state, and given a new tracking number.
I mentioned I thought his owl reverse would be an instant classic when this first came out. Glad to see Dan's original work shine on his pieces and his website:
you can send them to anacs for slabbing, they do most if not all of the Carr creations. and for an additional fee they will conserve the piece if necessary
