Just got my shipping notification on the owl today

I like dcarr's technical skill and I have to give major props to how clever his overstrike program is. He took a concept that was already well-known (overstrikes) and modified it in a way I at least had never hear of before and which I suspect is totally new: complete and total overstrike of both sides of an authentic host coin (three sides if you include the rims). Neither adding nor subtracting material. Creating coins the mint could have made, on equipment the mint actually used, on actual mint pieces. And he stayed inside the law.

The mint's own recent unsatisfying repurposed designs (2016 Merc, 2006 San Fran mint dollar) illustrate how well executed dcarr's overstrikes are. In my opinion, they are better than most of the mint's own attempts. It shows he's got his finger on the pulse of what we coin collectors want to see more than the mint does.

Even with the minor, intentional alterations dcarr makes on his overstrikes, his interpretations somehow ring more true than the mint's own attempts at reviving classic designs. From hobbyists who notice every spec on a surface, every missing serif on a millimeter-wide letter, that says something.

That set is one of my favorites. Yes, it was somewhat pricey. But my purpose wasn't to make money on it. The purpose was to refine and showcase my favorite designs of 2007-2015. Making that set required sculptural refinements and the engraving, hardening, and polishing of ten dies (nine obverses, one reverse). And there were also nine different production runs with different coin press adjustments for each. All that, just to produce 36 sets.

I saw that one, thought on bidding myself but thought it looked really suspect. The center detail of the obverse looked real soft, as it the light earth details were completely lost on a second generation transfer of some type. The reverse date and denom punches didn't look like the ones on the Carr bars I own. Maybe it's good, maybe not, but suspect by me none the less so I passed.

Now that I see it went for $202.00 I see that I wasn't the only one as I would expect a five oz to go for at lest 400 on eBay.

I hope Dan makes another run of these in odd numbers! Think 2.5, 3, 4 etc!!! Just buy them from him if you can.

Is the mintage number updated for the 2016 owl? Seems like it should be higher.

Just received my latest Dan Carr purchase. Very pleased!

Got the Octagon this afternoon. Very nice.

I'd like to get all my old coins scoured clean and then restruck with minty fresh surfaces and fantasy dates.

The coins being over-struck often shed small particles of silver.
That is a small struck-through piece.

If there are a bunch of them on a coin, or if any are fairly large, the coin is converted to the "bulk-handled" category (or scrapped and melted if really bad).

The "high-grade" pieces will generally have a small flaw or two (that is why I label them conservatively as "MS-65" grade).

Is this a recommendation, or are these for sale somewhere?

2015 Silver Owl goes for $400 BIN on ebay, $75 + shipping original asking price to $400 BIN minus ebay fees, about 400%, not bad, MHO
