What coins were on your want list years ago....

That you can no longer afford because of price increases? I am talking about coins that may have been in your price range even if you stretched a bit years ago but cannot afford today.

Here are a few of mine :

Years ago I could have afforded a 1793 liberty cap large cent in g condition if I stretched a bit. .

An 1878-S half dollar in EF

A 1794 half dollar (Heck, these weren't even that expensive in the 1970's-1980's).

A 1916 stand liberty quarter. (Almost bought one of these but changed my mind at the last minute)

A 1796 quarter

A 1901-S quarter (I did manage to get one of these just before the big price increases.)

All of these coins are still on my want list but unfortunetly for me these are all out of my price range today and I most likely will not be able to get any of them any more.

Back in the late 70's a friend of mine wanted to split a 1911 George V dollar on the auction block. I didn't have the disposable money. IIRC it sold for 80K....Not anymore.....

I wanted an Augustus Humbert $50 gold slug, and about four years ago I spotted the perfect one for me at a summer FUN show. The trouble was I had purchased a very expensive coin that completed my type set the previous spring, and my wife flatly said "No." We had the funds, but she would not let me buy it.

These coins usually come really beat up, and most of them are over graded in the holders. The piece I couldn't buy was attractive, properly graded and priced at ... okay just over $50 grand. Today the pieces you see at that price are always beat-up and unattractive. The better ones that I like seem to be worth $200 grand or more.

I've looked at auctions, and the prices are always strong, even for the not so nice ones. This is the type of coin you have to see before you buy it. You can't work with pictures. So that part of my want list will not be filled unless there is considerable downward turn in the coin market.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Back in the late 1970s I had a chance to trade my VF 1801 and EF-1815 halves for my choice of either a F 1796 or F 1797 half straight across. At the time replacement value for my two halves would have put me slightly behind on the swap (as I recall, maybe a 100 bucks?) so I didn't do it.

Today that same swap would net me about 50K in paper value. And the 1796...1797 halves are STILL the only holes in my half dollar year set--and short of winning the lottery will remain so.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

The top half dozen or so on my want list from 1975 were:

    1874-cc dime

    1842-0 sd quarter

    1851-0 quarter

    1852-0 quarter

    1860-s quarter

    1871-s quarter

    1872-s quarter

Over several years no one was able to find even a single specimen to offer me via my want list. I found 3 or 4 on my own at coin shows or through Coin World ads. Except for the 1874-cc all of these were listed from $50-$125 in XF in Coin World Trends. It was like finding free money if you bought from a dealer who went by the price guides.

I think most of my want lists went right into the garbage.
