Gee, thanks for that information, eBay.

Just take me to the damn categories, already. Why am I seeing THIS crap?

Oh, well. If you're going to force me through a page with an annoyingly staggered, Pinterest-style image array, I might as well read a little bit...

Oh, hey... here's some stuff I didn't know!

The first coins date back to ancient Egypt in 650 B.C.

Oh, really?
Huh. How 'bout that? Egypt, you say. Hmm.

Hunt Down Rare Coins

eBay makes it easy to find exactly what you’re looking for, so you won’t have to check multiple coin shops for those hard-to-get pieces. The rarer the coin, the higher the value. Famous rare coins can sell for millions of dollars. Some of those in top demand include:

The Morgan Silver Dollar, which has a high liquidation rate.

Franklin Half Dollars, which are rare and high quality. Only 445 million Franklins were produced between 1950 and 1963, and they were the only ones ever made.

The $20 Gold Double Eagle, made from 96 percent troy ounce gold. The value of the $20 Gold Double Eagle varies with the price of gold.

Mercury dimes, made between 1936 and 1942, are among the most beautiful U.S. coins. These collectible coins are exceptionally rare and difficult to obtain.

Indian Head Gold Coins MS 62 Condition are popular among coin collectors, particularly the $2.50, $5 and $10 versions.

It's not April First, is it?

That's so incompetent that I thought you were joking until I clicked the link. But then it is Ebay after all.

Too bad they didn't mention that cleaned coins are worth much less in the Which coins are worth money? section.

Looks like ebay is experimenting with computer generated content. Some of it can be STRANGE.

Only Mercury dimes between 1936 and 1942 are beautiful? How about those made 1916-1935 and 1943-1945?

I guess collectors aren't interested in Indian Head Gold Coins MS63 because they aren't the super popular MS62.

And how again are Franklin Halves rare???

eBay does have a problem with the defining of rare. But I guess they just look at how their sellers use it.

Crap! Those high grade Franklins that I own from 1948 and 1949 must be counterfeits. Oh well, guess I'll have to toss them in the trash now.

Amazing... I wonder who generates this hype for them? Just checking a Redbook would demolish that information.... Looks like a know-it-all amateur has been enlisted to write copy. Cheers, RickO

That proves it! My suspicions about those '48-'49 Frankies being fake Patterns were correct after all!

Now that's some info I never knew before. I'll definitely keep that in mind the next time I attend a local coin show. Once I'm done cherry-picking those dealers Mercs, I'll be chuckling all the way to the bank. image

I emailed them about this some time ago, when I initially posted this thread, and as you will see if you click the link, all the stupidities on that page still stand. image

Do they get their info from customers "write a report" and post it as gospel without verifying it themselves? Some of the sellers/buyers fall under the "low watt light bulb" category.

That article is still there and includes this little gem:

Exonumia (sic) coins are coins that were never issued by a government for currency. These include commemorative coins, ... proof coins, bimetallic coins, metals, and tokens.

If the coin isn't even dated 650 B.C., how does ebay know it's real? :)

Can you imagine how much business in coins ebay could do if they actually had some knowledge?
