Safety of Safe Deposit Boxes

1TwoBits1TwoBits Posts: 464 ✭✭✭✭
This past weekend marked the 10th time that thieves have gained access to a bank vault by cutting a hole in the roof of the bank. Once inside, the bank robbers make quick work of the safe deposit boxes and leave undetected. There was also a similar robbery just last month. Authorities believe all of the crimes are linked, and they have occurred in Brooklyn and Queens NY.

If you have one, does this type of robbery ever make you reconsider the safety of your safe deposit box? Do you ever consider moving to a different bank if you realize the roof of the building is right over the vault area (as opposed to a multi-floor building where the roof is not right above the vault)?

    not amazed

banks have a big red target on them for crooks, no matter where the vault or what type of security device are in place crooks will find a way to beat them and steal the loot in the vault

come on now crooks look over places they are going to hit and find weak spots

also crooks know all the tricks people will do to try and protect their items

Wow, that's a plot right out of the movies! I was expecting the other banks to be small credit unions or regional banks but all but one are national banks: Sovereign Bank, TDBank, TD Bank, TD Bank, TD Bank, CitiBank, Santander Bank, Maspeth Federal Savings and HSBC.

doesn't matter what kind of bank or whatever if there is a weak point the crooks will go for it

seems these banks had a weak point and the crooks took advantage of it

It makes one wonder what the roof was made of, to be seemingly breached so easily.

Good article, and for once the reader comments are actually quite interesting, instead of the usual idiotic drivel/hate speech that one sees on articles posed on the 'net.

Where is this bank that doesn't even have a 24 hour "no delay" motion sensor IN the vault?

On when they open.....off when they close.

    MINIMAL expected security.

they should have liability in my opinion.

Police say that the thieves cut wires before the robbery so there's no surveillance footage.

Jeez, just opening the phone/utility OUTSIDE BOX triggers the one at my just plain ole HOUSE!

I had a phone company guy call me out to UNPADLOCK the box so he could get in to add some service. Damn thing is a spring loaded BUTTON. Mess with box even BEFORE getting to wires and the alarm is being sent.

Still best to have insurance even on safety deposit boxes. The rates are much lower for insurance on safety deposit boxes compared to keeping coins at home/office etc.

That does take some skill, not something your normal thief could do.

My insurance covers my coins either in my safe deposit box or at home - but not during transportation.

So 99% of the time I keep them at the bank. If somebody did this at my bank I sure wouldn't be happy, but I'd be covered.

How does a bank pay a claim on what they do not know about.

MY SAFETY DEPOSIT box contained a $578,426,824 342 carat diamond necklace, an 1804 dollar, a 1964-D Peace Dollar, the recipes for KFC and Coca-Cola, and the complete backed up files from Hillary's server.

    How would that be handled?

When the bank rents you a SDB they require you to sign an agreement or contract which states that they have no liability for any losses.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

Cordless drill pilot hole and cordless saws all. DeWalt, snap on, hilti, Milwaukee, etc. bets defense I saw was ball bearing impregnated steel sheeting that dulls drill bits.

The bank wouldn't pay a claim. If you want the contents of a SDB insured then you purchase insurance for the contents.

In the safe Deposit rental agreement, there likely is a limitation as to the Bank's liability. And that amount comes into play in the event they are liable for the loss. One needs to have their own insurance even for coins at a bank vault. There are possible risks that extend well beyond liability that could be imposed on the Bank such as weather conditions etc...

My bank built a new branch and eliminated safe deposit boxes so I have to figure out where to go next.

The SDBs in my bank are housed in huge vaults. I would never use an SDB that was not set up this way. Nothing is 100% secure of course but I think crooks would go for far easier targets such as in the OPs post over SDBs in massive vaults.

This kind of stupidity, where SDBs are separated from the crooks by only a drywall ceiliing never ceases to amaze me.

On of my good friends installs vaults and vault doors. As one would expect, many are in the homes of very wealthy folks. Time and time again he's seen vault rooms with massive, expensive doors, thick, steel reinforced poured concrete walls and nothing but drywall for the cieling. Thus, a crook only has to cut through the floor above the vault and in they go. Unreal.

One always has to consider the weakest part of any security system.

Most banks that I've seen do have their SDBs in huge vaults. WHY would anyone use one that was not??

This is quite a string of robberies... The perpetrators have a great system, however, they will

likely now become overconfident and mistakes will begin - if they have not already. This type of thing always gets pushed too far. Cheers, RickO

Gee whiz......Looking at the picture of the hole it doesn't look like the vault had a top panel. Incredible.......

nobody even mentioned the fact that if you have anything in a safety deposit box, the government could seize them at any time. I REALLY AM NOT a conspiracy theorist but do ANY of you really trust our government? I prefer home protection.

I never recommend a safety deposit box for coins.

It is a good place for documents however.
