One ugly coin

MorganMan94MorganMan94 Posts: 1,330 ✭✭✭✭✭
I don't know what possessed someone to do this, I know it isn't a valuable coin but I like the design of Mercs, not so much this one. Has anyone seen something like this? I have ran across a few 1oz Morgan designs that kinda make her look like a zombie too.

What if it'd had been a 42/1? That was the first thing I checked for.

I kinda like them. Especially this one...

The 42/41 was the first thing I looked for too, would have been a real shame if it was. I didn't even look through his other auctions but he does have some pretty cool items. Not sure that I would want them though.

Would PCGS slab any of these (with Altered Surfaces, of course) or are they too dramatic?

On a side note: What if this skilled craftsman took a D. Carr creation and altered the date to a normal struck coin.
Could it then feasibly pass through PCGS and get slabbed?

These are real coins although they are nothing that I would want to own..

There is a market for these...just as there is for hobo nickels.... I have said it many times.... People collect all sorts of things...Cheers, RickO

I've railed against the skull and zombie fad in hobo coin carving before, on creative grounds, simply because it's been done to death.

My complaining was of course an exercise in futility. These artists will continue to carve what is popular and what sells, but only the true masters will do really original work.

Browse the Hobo Nickels category on eBay sometime. I do, periodically. The skull stuff is a dime a dozen and I wouldn't be surprised if it comprised 40-50% of the category sometimes. Boooring!

But look at some of the truly masterful carvings with original compositions and there you'll see furious bidding and strong prices.
