Memphis IPMS #40 - - on the horizon

This will be my 23rd consecutive visit to the Memphis IPMS - - I am looking forward to it (as always) because it's the big 40th Anniversary show for this fantastic paper money orgy, and it's also rumored to be the final time for the IPMS show to be held in the fine city of Memphis, TN due to reasons beyond the scope of my limited understanding of how these convention things work.

- Will you be there? (me: Wed- Sun)

- Information/rumors for location of next year's show?

- Best ribs in Memphis? (me: Central BBQ - midtown)

Will be arriving on Wednesday around noon time to get the Exhibit Area set up. We've got 31 exhibitors lined up using a total of about 160 cases (including yours truly and our very own Tookybandit). That total does not include a very special exhibit of over 50 cases of Idaho Nationals. And, of course, will be there through Sunday.

Don't forget the SPMC Breakfast scheduled for Friday morning. Tickets can be purchased at the SPMC website - www.spmc.org - for $20 up until the day before the show. At the door, they are $25.

Regarding rumors for next year - all I keep hearing is "Nothing has been officially decided". Of course, that could change at any moment.

Should arrive Friday morning but have to depart Saturday afternoon. Of course, schedule flexible due to soon-to-be-born granddaughter.

Rumors abound as to future of Memphis as site for IPMS so I'll not comment.

Years ago the Rendezvous for ribs was a "must eat" place.

Is the documentary before or after Memphis? I thought it was the week after (same day as the Long Beach show).

Thursday and Friday. It would be nice to find a note or two at this show. The auction from my perspective is lacking.

I'll be there from Wednesday afternoon thru late Sunday.

I've heard many cities: Philly, Norfolk, Dallas, New Orleans, Orlando, and the lead city Kansas City.

The best ribs question can get you into a big time argument! I have a tie: Blues City Café and Central BBQ (NOT the one downtown). If I had one choice - Central.

There was a time when Memphis was the best show around. All the dealers saved their best material and there were tons of neat offerings on hand at most tables - especially interesting and rare nationals. No more. All the good stuff goes to auction. There is little new or interesting material to be found.

The time has surely come to move this show to a more congenial location. Memphis is a dangerous city, and the service at the hotel restaurant is so slow that it is unfathomable. Not to mention the sketchy transport from the airport into town.

It must be moved to a location that has millions of people within a quick driving distance. Philadelphia, Baltimore, Pittsburgh are good choices. Kansas City is just off the beaten path and really not any better than Memphis as a locale.

Never will happen - too expensive. The City used to be a mecca for all sorts of coin shows decades ago and they've all died off.

It'll be interesting to see what happens. One of the major reasons talked about for moving the show was to find a location with easier, and less expensive, air access, especially for the overseas dealers. I don't see how Kansas City would fit that criteria. Dallas, Atlanta, Orlando, Philly, OK. Norfolk (huh?) - I don't see that as an international hub.

Atlanta is super cheap to fly into. There was a Whitman show a while back at the Cobb Galleria Center but that is a solid hour drive from the airport.

KC is cheap flight from almost anywhere.
Chicago is definitely out of the question and I live there.
    Dallas might work.
Do we really need another show on the East coast?
Denver, Cincinatti, Minneapolis are all airline hubs.

Just out of curiosity, I went to the Expedia web site and checked out some air fares to various cities. I used Charlotte as my originating airport as it's the closest "big" airport to me. I excluded Minneapolis because of Minnesota's onerous coin dealer laws which are chasing all the shows away. I checked round-trip fares for Father's Day weekend (the traditional Memphis weekend):

    Dallas - $242
    Cincinnati - $225
    Kansas City - $311
    Las Vegas - $396
    Indianapolis - $285

Now, this is just airfares - I certainly don't know what kind of facilities are available in those cities - perhaps the folks who are advocating certain cities can enlighten us.

I was just curious, based on the claims, as to what cities would really be the cheapest to get to (at least for me).

    Same exercise for Detroit to...

    Dallas - $205

    Cincinnati - $304

    Kansas City - $106

    Las Vegas - $295

    Indianapolis - $299

I don't see anyone putting Detroit on the list... We have a major airport that has alot of international flights. Downtown Detroit has recently renovated large convention center and the next expansion is already in the works. It's more than big enough as it hosts the International Auto Show every January. Lots of hotels and great places to eat. On the down side, I definitely would be very careful at night in downtown Detroit though. Bad things can happen if you get away from the common areas just like Baltimore or Memphis or any major city.

The airfares will of course vary widely depending on the region you are in compared to where you're flying to. If I did the same comparison from Los Angeles I would probably get something completely different. As for Detroit I would think the perception of it being one of the most run down and dangerous cities in the U.S. (Memphis is too) would keep a lot of people from attending.

I vote for Dallas since it is in a central location which would make for a more fair travel for both East coast and West Coast people. Plus it is generally among the cheapest destinations to fly to.

I would love the show to be in Dallas because I live in Houston. The only bad thing about having the show in Dallas is the State of Texas would want all the dealers to pay sales tax, so I have been told.

    Wednesday noon - Saturday afternoon.

It would be nice for the show to move somewhere with a direct flight. Pittsburgh would be fun.

Memphis BBQ is just like any other BBQ I have ever had. Except that it is three times more expensive in Memphis and there is a long line. I am excited about Restaurant Iris, Texas De Brazil, and Folk's Folly. I still miss the Butcher Shoppe though.

So do I - that was a tradition for a group of us for over twenty years. We always tipped the waiter/waitress in $2 bills - that always generated a great reaction.
