The auction is up on-line. Opening bid on the 1822 HE is $2.6 mil.

    I'll be there.
Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

I don't believe that the Pogue will allow the 1822 go for $2.6 mil. I think the price gotta reach $5 mill (or so) before it sells. If I were in their shoes, I wouldn't that one go cheap. They don't need the $$$$

I wonder how long the 1822 will be off the market after this next sale?

I will be there as a witness to history. Certainly not as a buyer.

The 1822 brought $682K in the very depressed down market of 1982. Great coins were dirt cheap back then. A multiple of 4X since then is sort of absurd. I would look at 6X to 10X which would be $4 MILL to $7 MILL. Consider that the 1794 SP66 dollar sold for less than the 1822 $5 several years later at the Amon Carter sale, a much stronger market. In 1982 the Robison 1839-0 proof 50c sold for around $14K. It's value today is 10X to 25X that.

Sorry I can't bid on the 1838-C half eagle! I'll leave the 1822, with all of its charms, to the people who have far more resources than I do. Let's hope that it does not go to someone who will give it to the government. Two of those coins "in the the public trust" is enough.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I dont think the 1822 will sell, it will be reserved and not meet the reserve, thats my forecast.

The 1804 Dollar and the 1822 half eagle both are reserved I have been told, but they didnt disclose the reserves so far.

Regarding values I dont think you can make the math it was 680k then so now it must be 10x. The 50 USD Kellogg sold at 300k USD at Garrett in 1982 and its not a 3 mio USD coin today.

Some coins did 25x since then and some others 2x.

I personally wouldnt know what to do with the 1822 half eagle or 1804 Dollar, as they both dont fit into the set Im trying to build.
