Regency Auction toned coins

Did someone here win Lot 356? I loved that Peace Dollar! Only two bidders over $3500, and it hammered for $8750. If you ever want to sell, it looks like I'm your best shot!

Two-sided color that's that vibrant on a Peace Dollar is pretty rare.

Whoever paid $9k for that must be having a hard time spending their money.

It even surprised Laura. Their estimate was $2k

Their estimates are almost ALWAYS low...same with Stack's etc. When the results are higher than their low estimates it helps them look good to the consignor as the best place to auction things. Seems to be a common practice in the industry.

I have seen a few just like that coin. A guy at a show had a couple dozen common date Peace dollars that looked very much like the auctioned coin. They were pretty in hand and most were mainly flashy yellow/gold with traces of other colors. He said he had sold quite a few more and these were what were left. He wanted to get rid of the last group and so I traded him for an equal number of modern commemorative dollars. I asked if he had made them and he looked kind of sheepish but did not say. He did give me a pretty good hint on how one would go about re-producing these colors on a Peace dollar though.

Looks like a "heat" catalyst type toner. Especially if it's that yellow, it's one of the supposed flags for that coloration. Could be an example that has spent its time in an envelope in a hot/arid climate.

Congrats to the consignor. That seems like a strong price, then again, toned Peace dollars are not my collecting interest.

Followed by an approval service with stickers.

the buyer is way beyond buried in this coin.

I do wonder if it was just heat or if some other chemical help was used.

I have seen an IKE with a similar look , its floating around the bay.

This orig toned A&R half realized $5,000. It has been around the block though. Was at the 2008 ANA for sale at $16,500 in an NGC MS65 holder. Sold at the 2011 S/B summer ANA auction as NGC 65 for $11,960. Shows that a certain segment of the coin market has been destroyed since 2008. This coin dropping 70% in "value." And the downgrade + sticker didn't do anything to save it. Probably would have been better leaving it alone in the NGC 65 holder. The photo doesn't do the coin much justice. It's probably worthy of a technical 64+ though I'd admit the eye appeal PCGS requires for that grade is not there.

Yikes! From the hits in the obv fields shown in the image, 65 seems to be a gift grade. Downgrading a maxxed out coin may help with registry set integrity, but does not appear to be a good strategy for maximizing sales price at auction.

As a toned Peace Dollar collector, I would not have bought it at plain old 66 money, so something else must be in play. (Images must not at all show the real look)

I love Peace dollars and I have a growing appreciation for originally toned coins. This one, however, does nothing for me.

The next lot, which is also a coin with significant toning is closer to my taste, but still went for pretty strong money.

BTW, there were quite a few unsold lots in this auction........ more than I would have expected.

If that sucker was in the Legend auction, she might have hammered at 10 grand. I think the toning is far superior to the other, but it's still nothing great.
