    its not a bad coin, its merely misattributed. I politely told the seller, alas perhaps he isn't ready to accept the reality that its an open 3 not a closed 3

    Even today, a lot sellers and dealers don't get major varieties right. I wish I had a dollar for every time I ran into an 1842-0 large date quarter that was incorrectly called a "small date."

    Simple idiot proof method for distinguishing 1842-O LD from 1842-O SD:

    The base serif of the 1 of date spans across 3 dentils on LD.

    The base serif of the 1 of date spans across 1-1/2 dentils on SD.

    Unless an 1842-O is imaged as a Hubble satellite telescope view, one only has to be able to count to 3. image
