Whether to downgrade a 'Cameo' ??

I am a great believer of the value of CAC. It adds a substantial degree of grading confidence for non-expert collectors.

I have a nice pattern coin graded (across the street) as Pr65 Red Cam. It did not CAC the first time.

IMHO the coin deserves the 65 -- original surfaces, strong color, insignificant blemishes, etc. -- except the REV is marginal for cameo effects.

This is the dilemma:

1.) Should the coin be resubmitted to the grading service to request the 'Cameo' designation be deleted?

2.) What is being risked that it will then not CAC even as a non-cameo?

Advice and recommendations are always welcome.

Would you be disappointed if it was rejected again?

Would it make you any more inclined to sell it?

For these questions and their added uncertainty and angst, I will buy a CAC coin if it has BEEN done, but not submit a graded coin to them.

Not if I like it now as it is.

I like CAC coins as well, but I wouldn't send one in to remove a designation just hoping that that was the reason it didn't sticker the first time...and hoping it would without the designation. Remember, there are NO guarantees and it may STILL not sticker.

Do you LIKE the coin? If so, put it aside and enjoy it, even without the sticker.

Do you NOT like the coin without the sticker? If that is the case, sell it and buy a replacement, with the sticker, you like.

I have a rattler holdered morgan that is PL on the label. Long time again. Things change and I doubt it would get PL today. CAC feels the same way and didn't sticker it.

I still like the coin, as it is, and as it is priced. I kept the coin and am fine. I am NOT sending it in to get anything changed/removed. If I feel I need that coin in the same grade/designation, and with a sticker, I will just buy one.

Call John and ask him what held it back. Also, I might be apt to sell it in the CAM holder and buy something else.

Unless the coin is very memorable, or unless it was freshly there, he probably won't remember. I say this as someone who has done exactly what you suggest.

We hear a lot about coins that people believe SHOULD CAC, but didn't.

    Idea for an interesting thread:

"Post a CAC coin that you believe should NOT have been CAC'ed!"

There has to be a few that some will offer up? Maybe?? I'd have to review my own 8 or 9 random CAC coins for consideration since I don't even remember which ones are CAC'ed, and which aren't! I got them by circumstance, and not necessarily by intent, but I seem to recall one that I thought was rather *blah* after I got it....

The arguments that would ensue could be enlightening. image

I'm in the "if you like the coin, forget the CAC" corner. (But then, I don't swim in the big money pool either.)

I have often felt he keeps a database of his notes. Just a feeling though when I have called him. I will ask if I have the chance in the future.

If you swam in that deep pool, they'd know your name and do what you wanted.

Read the "Pogue IV CAC or NO CAC?" thread.

As for the OP, I'd send the coin to PCGS to cross at your minimum specified grade. Then, assuming it crossed, I'd send it to CAC in the PCGS holder.

As someone else mentioned, if you cross it at the end of the day you might very well end up with the loss of the designation and no sticker. This is true for + grades, *'s, etc.

If you are not happy with the coin 'as is', then sell it and get one with all the features you desire...playing games (i.e. downgrade to get a sticker) could result in a net loss and really

not worth the effort. Cheers, RickO
