1964 ACCENT HAIR in PCGS PR69DCAM!!!??? My Unicorn coin!

As you all can see by my screen name, I am a little bit crazy and totally in love with 1964 Accent Hair Kennedy proofs... I have always wondered if there are any AH worthy of the elusive PR69DeepCAM designation...?

The other day when I looked up a coin using the new coinfacts app I noticed that PCGS now has a picture (plate coin I believe?) of a PR69DCAM Accent Hair!!! Then yesterday a friend noticed it too and texted me asking if I knew anything about it... Does anyone know anything about this, mainly if there is really one out there, and if so, is it for sale????? I would love some more info if anyone can help me out.

Thank you very much!

As you mentioned, there is (at least) one (attributed) out there.

Is it for sale? Highly doubt it...but everything is for sale for the right price.

I had this coin in hand last week. It was sent in for QA Check verification and passed.

The coin is a monster. Clean and probably the deepest cameo I've ever seen for the type.

Can't comment further, as coin belongs to a customer.

Russ made it a decade ago.
He found it in a 64 proof set for like $10 (off eBay if I remember correctly) image

That man had a great eye for these.

Russ is the guru of these for sure.

It's currently on Great Collections. I have no connection to it.

This was not a Russ coin. it was recently graded.

Now that it's listed, it's obviously for sale.....NOTE WE HAVE NO CONNECTION TO THE COIN EITHER

Is the coin fresh, or was it upgraded from another holder?

Russ have a photo example page with the wishbone hair. He probably took it down after too much competition.

The best I ever did was a PR65 image

The coin Russ found on Ebay in the '64 proof set graded PR68DC. I know he watched for years and no others had been made.

Looking at the two (68DC and 69DC) on Coinfacts, IMHO, the 68 is a nicer coin. The 69 has what looks like tiny milkspots above the A on the reverse and something funky happening between Dollar and the rim.

I'm surprised there are still any of these to be found. Wonder if a 70DC is out there anywhere?I keep waiting on another 70DC 69 Kennedy to appear, but still only the one.

The best I have ever gotten was a 67DCAM. The Russ coin was a 68DCAM. Always wanted to make one of those!! Oh well!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I once had a PF68 (but no cameo)

Here is one I picked up from a dealer recently. It was still in the original packaging. The coin is pretty nice, although it has what appears to be a struck through thread inside the "C" of AMERICA on the reverse.

How much do you think this would hurt the grade?

The 69 DCAM AH is now at $16k with 5 days to go. Will probably end up at $20k given it is pop 1/0.

Does anyone know if this coin is fresh "from the wild" or was it previously in another holder?

I just read this thread and since I enjoy the niche areas of 1950-1970 Proof and SMS coinage I took a peak at Coin Facts.

I assume the Coin Facts photo of the 1964 PF69 DCAM AH half dollar is the coin that is discussed in this thread (if my assumption is wrong let me know). A very eye appealing coin it is.

However, I would not view the coin to warrant a grade of 69. Too many flaws imo. The Coin Facts photo of a PF68 DCAM AH half dollar is very similar to the photo of the PF69.

Both the PF69 and PF68 coins in the photos exhibit flat areas on the obverse (the hair in front of and in top of the ear) and reverse (the vertical lines in the shield that are not fully struck up and that are weakly frosted at best. The PF69 coin also has horizontal trough running from let to right in the top part of the shield on the reverse.

Comparing the photos of the PF69 and PF68 DCAM AH half dollars shown in Coin Facts to Coin Facts photos of the PF69 CAM and the PF69 examples of the same coin reveals that the DCAM coins do not come close to the CAM and Brilliant coins. The CAM and Brilliant coins do not have the flat, weakly frosted hair on the obverse and have fully struck up and frosted shields on the reverse (with no horizontal trough).

Maybe I would think differently if I saw the Coin Facts coins in hand. However, from the photos of the DCAM PF69 and PF68 coins, I disagree with the numerical grade assigned to the coins (I still would love to own both coins, raw or slabbed however).

Never have submitted a Kennedy for grading- And that will finally change. Should be fun to see what happens- one is an Accented hair no chance at cameo but it has this compelling look. The other is a 1965 SMS and that one is a decent cameo-

The only thing I can see that sets apart the 69 from the 68 DCAMs is the 69 appears to have more frost and contrast. But yeah, with the flaws you mention and the milk spot on the reverse, 69 seems to be a stretch. Perhaps 68+ would have been appropriate.
