Received 2 pcgs 70 gold mercs

Just received 2 gold nerve in the mail. Both 70s. One has scratches at the bottom of the obverse and by the B in liberty, there looks like an o scratched in below the B in liberty. It's a full circle. I'll have pics later. Any thoughts?

A couple, 1) why did you have them graded in that condition and 2) what's a nerve?

    My thoughts are, sell.
  • Sorry about my typo " nerve " I was typing on my phone and couldn't see in that little box very well. As for the coins I bought them online from a big dealer. The other mercy I relieved is one of the high finned rims.

    Dealers always get the grades.

I bet you send those in you'll get 69's

Are they scratches on the coin or are they die scratches? These are two very different things that are graded in very different manners. Do you know the difference between the two?

My question is...why would you post without pictures?

Probably because he said he was posting from his phone (and probably not as easy for him to do that and do pictures) and he wanted to get the post done while he was thinking about it and not waiting to do it with pictures image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • I have the pics downloaded try to get them on now. Only the second time I've done this. Bochiman was correct.
  • Having a bit of trouble getting the pic to post. I'm using imgur. But what do I click on to post it?

I bought some from the mint, sold them raw for a profit, then bought a pcgs 70 on ebay. It also has a noticeable (with the naked eye) scratch or pen looking mark on the reverse, running from the left field, across the torch, and into the right field. Very disappointed that this graded 70. My raw coins looked nicer.
  • I have the pic ready I m just not sure how to post it. It's http://imgur.com/cGDcFaM

  • Yes that's it, thank you. It has a couple scratches on the edge at the bottom too. What is that o anyways.

I saw the gold Merc at a coin show. The bands at the bottom of the fasces were separated altho it was not easily visible under 10x glass and I had to turn the coin to see it. The bands at the top of the fasces were smooth.

I have received hundreds and hundreds of 70 grade Gold Mercs. back from PCGS already and, overall, the quality of the coins in that grade holder are exceptional. I am very impressed.

That 'o' looks like a strike through... maybe a piece of lint .... just a guess. Cheers, RickO

We've all seen examples of moderns graded 70 that appear 69 at best. MS70 ASEs are commonly overgraded IMO.

Not trying to downplay your unhappiness with the coins you bought. Just stating the obvious I guess.

    my advice:

if you are looking for a true 70, as a modern collector, you *always* have to view it in hand. i have seen many 70's with flaws that i would have been dissatisfied with if i had bought them for a collection...especially chinese pandas. i have seen it happen with NGC and PCGS.

the same is true with any coin that is graded such that the price is significantly different depending on a grade higher or lower. this is why cac has become important for certain coins.

many of these 70's are 69's. i have also seen some 69's that look better than 70. how is that possible? because they are getting slammed with thousands of coins to grade. there is no way they can spend more than a second or two grading these coins.

for example, here's one that graded sp70:

now, tell me...what i am to do with this one? I can't sell that as a 70! first world problems.

the rough area in the field is actually a die clash in the shape of the back of the neck from the bust on the obverse. but l@@k at those copper spots on the torch! yikes

Yikes is right. Thank you for sharing your pain as this helps me in sticking with my raw.
