MS70 Toned Silver Eagle

How do people feel about an MS70 toned silver eagle? Should an MS70 coin be allowed to have toning? or toning like this?

Even though it's not a quarter, I still think it was gassed in the holder imageimage

Yep, it looks like someone who once admitted to gassing Washington quarters taught someone his old trick. There is no way that coin toned like that (naturally) in a year. That coin was blast white when it was sent to PCGS.

Thanks for your input. I had not heard of gassing before. Always something new to learn!

Check out the coins in his feedback. He wants to be a coin doctor but is horrible at it. BTW, be wary of any toned coins coming out of the Orlando area. Well known company tones the hell out of stuff down there.

With so many of these coins AT, it's remarkable what premiums some people are willing to pay for these.

How can you tell just from a picture?

    Not doubting you, just curious!

Looks AT, but that's a heck of an accusation?!

I'm familiar with the whole gassing discussion, but I thought that was done with older style holders which didn't necessitate any manipulation of the holder itself?
What we've got here is failure to communicate.....

I would have thought if this coin was gassed, the color would have presented near the sides or bottom of the holder, not the top near the label. Looks like the label has a lot of ink in it. Perhaps the label gassed off when the slab was subjected to a hot environment? We may never know.

Wasn't there a thread a while back stating that PCGS no longer slabs toned ASEs? So this would be pretty suspicious.

They currently grade toned ASE's. I don't believe NGC does.

There is clear spotting... IMO that keeps it below 68.

I don't care for either of the toned Eagles shown above. Very suspicious and I'd run away from them if offered for sale.

Accelerated toning of some sort. I agree that toning that strong could not be accomplished naturally in only 1 year, whether in a roll, album, or left in the sun. In 10 years, it won't be so obvious.....image
