Do you crack NGC CAC coins prior to sending to PCGS or do you send in for Crossover?

Curious what is everyone's experience if you crack first in terms of:

- downgrade from NGC grade

- graded the same as NGC grade

- upgraded from NGC grade

If you don't crack first, would be curious to know why...

Depends on the coin... if low risk I'd crack to avoid the guarantee premium. If high risk, say a coin at a jump grade in an NGC holder, I would not crack as the downside risk far outweighs the upside.

I have not kept exact records, but I definitely have had more success cracking out rather than crossing over. If I have faith in a coin bought in an NGC holder it is because I think it will grade the same at PCGS, or maybe do even better. Since I like the coin, I take the chance on the grade.

Crossover all the way. The risk/reward is too skewed towards risk of a bad outcome. If the cross doesn't make sense with the crossover fees, guarantee premium, and round-trip costs to PCGS and possibly CAC, then re-think the cross.

I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

Just to clarify, I'm asking only about NGC coins with a CAC sticker, not plain NGC coins.

I haven't handled enough NGC CAC pieces to give a good answer. With non-CAC NGC coins, I ALWAYS crack them out before sending them to PCGS. Since I am either looking for an upgrade or an added attribution (yes, NGC misses good varieties all the time), there is no reason not to crack them.

When you crack a coin there's the risk that every Grader who ever see's the coin again may hate it and getting back to square 1 might never happen. On the flip side doing a crossover gives Graders 1 decision, yes or no.

I like the idea of starting with a clean raw coin where Graders are "forced" into doing their job but as was stated, that depends on the coin. It's a very slipper slope.

The best policy is to buy the coin in PCGS plastic already or accept the NGC, CAC combination unless you grade like a God.

If you do what you always did, you get what you always got.

It doesn't really matter.....PCGS doesn't care a bit about stickers. Just saying.
