How is your assessment of eye appeal? Do you collect coins that are ugly?

I just saw this page on eye appeal, and have to admit I have some coins that are ugly.

  • Personally, no, although my ugly coins have had a habit of upgrading, which simply leaves me puzzled.

I've been told by a dealer that my avatar coin is ugly.

It's so subjective, regardless of the chart.

It's all a matter of opinion. The only opinion that matters is yours if you own the coin, or the buyer's if you you are selling the coin.

I like the coins pictured in the "Above Average" section on the PCGS page. But I'm not a fan of wildly toned Morgan Dollars, so the example pictured for "Amazing" is not very appealing to me.

Quick summary of PCGS eye appeal and luster levels:

    2) Positive
    3) Above Average

As an artist, I know eye appeal when I see (buy) it.

Eye Appeal has different meanings to each collector. However, when a coin has amazing eye appeal be prepared to pay up for the coin.

I think tHe PCGS page is right on the mark.

And the 21P avatar coin certainly lacks eye appeal. Sorry.

we sometimes confuse "interesting" with "eye appeal"

a lot of coins are "interesting"...

many fewer coins are "eye appealing"...

i at least try to be honest with myself (self-admittedly i'm not always successful), but i see many people, especially when selling, call something "eye appealing" when it's only "interesting" at best.

I dont intentionally collect ugly coins. Dont know anyone that would, actually, given the choice between thise and eye appealing examples.
However, if you collect rare and esoteric items that seldom come to the market, sometimes you've got to be content with "ugly."

I think the 21P looks pretty nice. Not stunning, but a good looking coin.

This is exactly how I think about it, too. I don't collect any common coins in "ugly" condition, and don't understand why anyone would.

I do have some examples of very rare coins that are ugly compared to nice looking but common coins

I buy a lot of silver and gold coins for their bullion value. Many of them would easily be classified as "ugly" but who cares.

    No, I don't own any Morgans.image

I like pretty coins most. That's why the prices are high. People like to play "keep away".

Eye appeal to me, is without tarnish.... then without dings, marks or abrasions. Cheers, RickO
