NewP to share - Camp David Peace Dollar

I became aware of these coins after seeing them in Burdette's "A Guide Book of Peace Dollars, 2nd ed., pg 140". This thread from 2012 which was updated a few weeks ago got me thinking about them again. I contacted our own illini420 who had a few in inventory and he sent this one to me:

The host coin is a run-of-the mill low-end BU Peace dollar but the counter-strike is well-executed. The effect to the obverse portrait isn't too significant. What Peace dollar collection could be complete without one of these?

Pretty neat...I figured that there would be some OBV damage due to the indentation on the REV.

    Nice,

Here is a design prototype trial strike of that counterstamp.

They also were packaged in similar holder with black lettering. I'm not sure if one is more common than the other. I've only seen 1923 and 1924 host coins.

Glad the coin arrived safely... great pics too!

Mel Wacks did a great job on these and on many of his other pieces too. Really impressive how the obverse detail was preserved on the coins as well.

Here's an example of an earlier counterstamp he did to celebrate Thanksgiving 1976. A turkey stamp on a proof Franklin Half:

Always wanted one of these, but cant justify the cost.
Someday my appreciation will catch up to the expense...

All of Mel's pieces were struck by Adam Cool until recently. A lot of these pieces are very beautiful IMHO.

Unfortunately, Adam had passed away and starting with his pieces in 2015, Mel started working with BEX Engraving who struck the newer pieces.

I never thought of it too much but, Adam had excellent striking technique. From my perspective, BEX is still catching up but the quality has been improving.

Those are one of the harder Mel Wacks pieces to find.

The Maria Theresa Thaler, "Bicenthaler" is also tough, and I thought there was a copper large penny (British?) too, but I don't see it in Adam Cool's article.

Why didn't anyone do a "Bison-tennial" coin? Missed opportunity, I'd say......
