Sealed 1954 Proof Set.

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
I don't buy sealed sets very often, but last week we bought a really large collection and after going through it all the other day I discovered the 1954 set was still sealed. I decided to buy it. When I open it up what do you think I'll find??

I'll post pictures over the weekend before it's opened and the individual coins afterwards.

Im guessing milk spotted coins. I hope I'm wrong though.

I have a '54 set sealed as well, I'm afraid to open it.

Sadly, an average proof set - or worse imageimage

You can sell it on eBay if you hype it up with
Still sealed by US Mint for 62 years
Where do you think DEEP CAMEO PROOFS come from? Sets like this!
Are there thousands of dollars in undiscovered gems in this set?

If you sell it on eBay you first have to steam it open, look at the coins and then reseal it.

That's the only way sealed proof sets are sold on eBay.

I am thinking a nice CAM half dollar, maybe even the elusive DCAM. After a quick rinse to get rid of the spots, goes 66+

You will get one of three things:

    - About half of the 1954 Proof sets were packaged in the old cellophane sleeves. If the set was stored in a dry environment with steady temperatures, the coins might be nice. If you are really lucky there might be a two sided cameo coin in the set, preferably the half dollar.

    - The other half of the 1954 Proof sets were packaged in the cloudy plastic sleeves. Those things very often imparted toning which ranged from cloudy to black and ugly. The black, ugly toning can't be dipper off the coins, so they are fit for the junk silver pile, unless you find an individual who thinks the black toning is "attractive." From some of the comments I've seen on the Internet, such people do exist.

    - The set was stored in someone's garage, basement or attic. In that case they may have been baked, frozen, wetted down or a combination of all three. In that case it won't matter if the coin are cellophane or plastic, they will probably look like the devil.

Best of luck on the opening, that's an old set to have never been opened and I'm hoping it was stored well all these years, however, if average, My prediction:

The staple will be rusted. The cellophane will be brittle. The coins will be slightly hazy.. There will be some cameos, some will be one sided, some will be light cameos, the cent will be brilliant and lightly toned. The quarter will be the nicest coin, the Franklin will have some discoloration at the rim nearest the staple that will not dip off, and die polish lines that looks like light hairlines across the portrait and bell.

Have not posted in a while, but saw this thread by Keets and decided to give my 2 cents.

The contents of the sealed box will most likely be one of the three scenarios described by Bill Jones. Hopefully the first.

A few years ago I was at a B&M shop in Denver. The owner had multiple boxed 1954 sets whose coins were contained in the soft poly bags used in the latter part of 1954 and a large part of 1955 instead of the 1950-early 1954 brittle cello sleeves.

I expected the coins in the poly bags to have ugly dark toning. Not so.

The three silver coins did have some dark purple crescent toning that under good lighting is eye appealing. The quality of the coins was very good. The three silver coins have light to moderate frosted devices, with the central devices not being toned. The fields are nicely mirrored also. These attributes gave the silver coins in the set positive eye appeal, so much so that I bought one of the sets. I like colorful toning on proof coins that frames frosted central devices.

For this set any attempt to remove the toning would be a disaster since the removal of the purple toning can be done, but an ugly tan/yellow color remains that can not be removed.

I took the coins out of the poly bags and put them in a Capital holder to prevent further poly bag toning that would ruin the coins.

    What up Keets?

I have an unopened box as well. I bought a 53, 54 & 55 trio from an estate collection that came into a local shop I used to work for... they all appear unopened and original to me.
I'm curious to see what you find Keets.

Actually if you can get the nail certified as a struck on nail Mint error it would be worth multiples of a 1954 proof set. image

well, I opened it up Saturday evening to find nice clean tissue paper and an un-rusted staple holding together, sadly, five polybags. the coins were as Bill had described when they are in those bags, black tone that is quite unattractive and virtually impossible to help. I was hoping for cello.
