Not the best way to make money.

She came with an old Harris folder . I opened it. There was a dateless buffalo nickel (not on a mound or with a mintmark) and a dateless standing liberty quarter which had 3 stars on the reverse. Nothing out of the ordinary, per se. except for a little creasing and ink marks on the inside folder. Kind of typical for a day in the shop. Slow days , long nights.
The analytical and initial assessment lead me to say: "Ma'am, as this goes, it's not even worth $5. "
She asked : "Could I get $5 for it ? I need milk for my baby "
I shook my head. Took out $2 from my pocket and said, "No. Here are two dollars. Now you could take that book up the street to the next dealer and see if he will give you $3 ". She giggled a little and went on her way.
The guy on my phone during this visit asked : "Did that just happen ? You gave someone two bucks to leave ? "
I said, "Yeah, I know. This is going to cost me, paying people to leave with the stuff I don't want and pointing them to the competition , hoping he's feeling generous."
Welcome to the city ! It's a tough world out there.

Ya gotta do the best ya can to make 'em feel human, without being a philanthropist.
a delicate skill i doubt i will master but i sure hope my effort translates.
like hearing of little acts of random kindness.

Paying people to leave. Funny stuff. As a criminal defense lawyer,I sure wish I had came up with that idea. I've heard some stories...
That's funny, at least to me and when I was practicing I'd actually say the same thing, give people a quote then they try to lowball. I'd say shoot I'd pay you $1,000 just to leave and never come back...

One day, he needed a part that I had just picked up in a junk clean out. It would bring about $50 or so on ebay, but I really had nothing in it. He wanted it, whined, offered $5, I showed him worse ones on ebay for more, etc.
I finally told him he could take it that day to make sure it fit his car, (which I knew it did) but when he came back, he owed me $100 for it, no negotiation.
That was 2 years ago, have not seen him since.
Not quite as nice, but I had a customer that ALWAYS complained about everything, low balled everything, whined about every thing on it, etc. He would ask a price, I would say $50, he would counter at $5, whine, beg etc. Every visit was a 30 minutes to over an hour for mostly nothing.

I think you got the better end of that deal. By far!
Life is too short.
