Silver Eagles used for Silver Rounds?

joeykoinsjoeykoins Posts: 17,388 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hi guys, I went to a coin shop looking for Silver Rounds and they only had some Silver Eagles that were priced the same as the Silver Rounds! The dealer said because of a tad scratch or a hit on them he couldn't sell them as the original priced Eagles. I was very surprised by this. Did I get a great bonus or is this normal in other shops? Regardless, I am very pleased in buying two 1986 S.Eagles for the spot priced of Silver Rounds. Note: these coins are hardly scratched or marred as the dealer stated. Later, I complimented him that this was very nice of him to price these coins as a bullion coin.image

It's not uncommon to buy regular bullion eagles at silver round prices, especially at coin shops. Pawn shops think they are worth more but dealers usually get them at discounted prices from the mint anyway. Good time t pick them up for stock piling a little silver.

Bullion SAEs that have been mishandled, as that dealer stated, have popped up in the bins with silver rounds at some of the dealers I have seen locally as well; over the years.

Trouble is, for me, if silver was under $10/oz, I would get some. Silver where it is, I don't buy the rounds and I am not interested in buying the SAEs like that. I'll just take one of my extras if I want a pocketpiece.

How much would a very slightly worn 1986 Silver Eagle go for in value? Mind you, this '86 still even has the luster of a well condition one, without any hits or scratches too.

Depends what someone is willing to pay.

I, personally, wouldn't pay over bullion spot price for it.

Someone else may pay a little over, if they liked the look, but the resale value is minimum.

What is going price of "non slightly worn" one? Ie....mint state? I don't think a raw one goes for all that much, right?

See, this is my whole point how amazing he would sell these for the lower spot price of Silver. I paid $18.50. The 1986 (being the first year) should be at least over $20 or $30, in which I see on Ebay?

when folks come into sell silver, if the eagles aren't fresh, I buy them as generic .999 silver and sell them the same way.

I may have to see if the neighborhood B&M has some in their scratch & dent tray. We have a local muffler shop who will barter for .999 silver.

18.50 is a fair price for ASEs. 18.50 is too much premium for generic silver rounds.

If they are over spot, I pass..... I have stacked silver for a long time and do not need to add while prices are high... and yes, spot is high compared to much of the silver I have acquired....Cheers, RickO

Is it currently high compared to where you think it will be a year from now?

At the time I purchased these, silver was over $16.00. So, is $2.25 over spot too high?

I would not think $2.25 over spot is high on ASE's.

I would like to snag some at that price!

That's pretty common from what I see. If they are marred up they trade the same as generic bullion.
