Irritated by the new generation of NGC slabs

WeissWeiss Posts: 9,942 ✭✭✭✭✭
I appreciate the TGPs are playing cat and mouse with counterfeiters and other nefarious people out there. And they need to keep up with style and aesthetics.

But I'd like to ask our hosts, should they listen, NOT to do as the folks ATS have done. These new left-justified slab inserts make the online image standard so many of us have embraced (with the obverse, reverse, and insert above/behind) more difficult to create (or at least to make attractive).

Have you guys tried with these? What are your thoughts?

    Non-Hebrews read left to right.

If you look at most advertising copy you won't see centered text.
There is a reason for that.

I do not like the left justified labels and have not owned one yet.

On another note, I never liked the white prong holder on smaller coins either.

meh.....I can see getting used to the left justified just as much as center justified.

I just hate text covering graphics.

I could see where it is a pain for making the composite images. Do you have any attempts that you can share?

Personally, I prefer the NGC holder. Has an overall cleaner look to it. I kinda like the left-justified inserts, too.

I am not a fan at all of the new NGC labels. Either the left-justified part or the huge text. Unlike many here my collection is about evenly split between PCGS and NGC but I don't plan on submitting any coins to NGC as long as they have that label. I suppose at some point I'll cave if they keep it long enough.

I might be in a minority here, but I like NGC. I actually think the snobbishness of some PCGS collectors turns a lot of people off of pcgs. I am not a huge fan of the left text though. You cannot fit anymore on the label if the text is the same size. And it should not be a problem for the pictures... just make the label smaller so the whole label shows. Easy peasy.

I don't like the left text either. The info on the label is the main attraction and thus should be centered. Too much open space on the label with the left text.

Here's an early attempt I made with a recently submitted piece. I had to cut and fill a lot of information. To me, messing with the insert information is on par with photoshopping the coin. It's not the true picture that these images are supposed to represent.

The left justified allows more room for other "advertisements", ANA 125th Anniversary for instance, and other images for "special labels". I don't care for the holder as a whole, but if the holders were all the same that would be really boring.

But the coin is centered in the slab so this messes up that "fung shway" or whatever it is. It flairs up my OCD.

Like Roadrunner I concentrate on the coin, the layout of the label is insignificant. That said I prefer the centered text because it has a more balanced look.

Alternatively, since you're already in Photoshop, just create a text box and type the label information into it. You can justify it which ever way pleases you.

I do not let the typeface, alignment, label color, type size, etc. bother me. I care about the coin -- maybe a reassessment here -- my primary goal isn't to be able to create pleasing picture composites of my coins or to show off numbers on labels.

Decrease the size of the label or increase the space allowed above the coin. Problem solved.

there should be a label on the back side of all holders that shows the grading history. Every time it's resubmitted in its holder, it should be updated to show previous assigned grades and the assigning TPG. A running history of professional grading.

That's what I tried originally, brg. But the label size looked almost comically small, especially compared to the balance of my imaged pieces. Yours doesn't look too bad, though. I'll try playing with the images again.

I've posted about how NGC slabs have gone from meh, to bad, to just outright _blank_ image

I don't know who they contract as designers but they should try to get second opinions. I stopped buying NGC slabs altogether unless I can buy the coin at "raw" prices, because I immediately crack them out.

I understand that many take issues with my dislike of the NGC slab, but I'm a "design" person at heart and looking at an NGC slab immediately raises my heart rate...like a fingernails on a chalk board.

  • brg5658brg5658 Posts: 2,399 ✭✭✭✭✭
All of the emotional complaining about slab design and style is pretty comical.

Roll back 40 years -- would these same whining people have turned up their nose because a coin was in the wrong kind of flip that set off alarms for their "finer sense of style"? Give me a break people -- if your biggest sticking point in the hobby is what color your holder is, or the prongs (heard so many rants about this I could write a book), or the alignment of labels, maybe you should be collecting antique glass or "mint in box" Barbie dolls...

The new label allows them to use the other side for pretty pictures.

And...I'll bet sometime in the future they have plans to add info such as luster, strike, as they have done for ancients. Remember you saw it here first!

    Get busy PCGS ....LOL.
  • Desert MoonDesert Moon Posts: 5,974 ✭✭✭✭✭
Slightly off topic, but I prefer the plastic of PCGS over NGC plastic, and the neutral gray over the white. The white makes dark coins look too dark to my eyes, especially for old copper. The grey blends in better I think with the coins. For the NGC plastic, even the scratch resistant ones, it is hard to remove the scratches without leaving a pile of hairlines during the polishing. So from the perspective of minimizing reholders, the PCGS plastic is better as the scratches can be removed without leaving hairlines. In terms of labeling, don't matter, but I think the new NGC labels are very attractive. I don't use the labels in my images anyway as I don't like the look. So that issue does not affect me like it will some.

I don't like labels in coin images at all. They detract from the coins, IMO.

If the image must display the TPG, grade, variety, etc. then some text in an attractive font and color can be added in a way that is subtle and complementary.

If we do this we will have to start slabbing all coins in the ATB 5 oz over-sized slab,,,,, to make room for all the past grading history on some coins.

When I received my first submission back from NGC after the change to these new labels I was surprised because I was not aware they were making the change. At first glance I liked the look. Thereafter I never gave the labels a second thought until this thread. I have always preferred the look of a coin with the white back round. I think it "directs" you eye to the coin better than the clear plastic used here.

As I've said before, I use both services because there are obvious inconsistencies between them. I could care less who did the encapsulation otherwise.
