State Quarter Lowball

I've had this coin for about 4 years. My 96 year old grandpa said he had a silver quarter in his change, but when I arrived this is what I found. I figured I'd send it in just to see what happened. The satin finish was unexpected. Needless to say I find this a lot cooler than a worn silver quarter! I apologize in advance for the bad cell phone pics. Enjoy!

    That's a pretty cool coin.

I can't imagine how it got that much wear.

I'm curious to know how you can tell the satin finish from the regular business strike in that grade- are there die markers?

I am curious of that as well. Maybe one of the modern guys can explain.

There must be another design difference BESIDES the finish? Because any sign of the satin finish is long gone.

Was the relief different? Almost looks like the bust is higher than a business strike coin? (Even with the wear).

Anyone else think it's overgraded? Shouldn't all the lettering be visible for an 8?

    Agreed pcgs69. I was at a 4-6 when I sent it.

Had to be artificially worn down and then in someone's pocket trying to make it look natural and it was naturally spent? Either way, I think it's pretty cool.

A clad coin will not wear that much in 9 years. There are tons of 1960's quarters with way more detail than that. That's 50 years!

    It was artificially done.

A very nervous persons worry coin....

I would have to question it's actual wear myself...but people don't pay for my opinion.

ole George got around that is for sure!

Could it be a Die Adjustment Strike ...

Could it be a quarter on dime stock? The pop report lists a PO01 Missouri. Would love to ?see what it looks like.

Wouldn't the weight and thickness difference be obvious to the graders? image

It's not on a dime planchet, all the outside lettering would be missing .....

I'm not referring to a dime planchet. Dime stock. I Have a State quarter with a similar strike but when you look at the edge it looks only about half the size of a quarter

I think I understand, you mean the thickest of the stock, not the size of the planchet ?

Correct. And like you said if you didn't ask if it was a error it wouldn't be graded as such.

So in this case, it would be on a thin stock ?

Looks better in hand. Feels better there, too. Nice to see it out of the pocket.

It sure looks weird being worn like that! Cool though...
  • FredWeinbergFredWeinberg Posts: 5,925 ✭✭✭✭✭
It's not struck on dime stock thickness.

    It's simply a well-worn coin.

No error but think it has been tumbled then carried for a while as pocket piece or ball marker.

It's possible it spent a vast majority of it's life in and out of change machines at a laundromat, arcade, or some quarter dependent business.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

I'm stunned by 2 things. (1) Why someone would spend good money to send in such a low grade clad coin. (2) Why PCGS would grade a coin that that so obviously has unnatural wear and isn't the natural surfaces.

I've never seen a clad coin in change that comes anywhere having that much wear.

Looks like artificial wear to me. As someone else pointed out, there are tons of clad coins in circulation that have been for the past several decades that do not have that much wear.

Found a 2009D Puerto Rico quarter a few yrs ago in change that has a very sim. appearance on the obverse as yours (altho not quite as worn)

Stood out as it just looked strange.

At first glance I thought silver also and was surprised to see the date.

Could be the satin fin. but don't know if the Puerto Rican coins were struck w/ satin fin.

Seems like the wear or lack of detail is from 7 to 12 on obverse but not much wear on rev.

Like what Stash said re: die adjustment strike

Puerto Rico quarters were struck in satin finish for the 2009 mint sets.

Found this one years ago when I searched through uncirculated rolls. Found two from one single roll, thought they were a result of a struckthrough debris or a worn die, so I kept them. REV still looks uncirculated but OBV has tons of unusual bag marks and missing several details. Sorry for my poor photographing skill.

That amount of wear is unusual... it can be quickly done in a cartridge tumbler though...

Send it in for grade review just to make the PCGS graders scratch their heads. Be sure to stick a post-it note to it with some grumblings about gradeflation. "Back when I was a pup, a VG needed to have full rims on both sides!"
