  A good read but I question the reason for the existence of the 1918-S 8/7 variety, which I believe was the result of a hubbing error, not the intentional use of a 1917 die with an "8" engraved over the "7."

  Nice article. I've not been active on the show circuit for a while. I wonder what effect the passing of Mr. JH Cline has had on collecting this series.

  Articles like this written by a guest dealer have shown up in the CDN monthly summary several times per decade. I first watched them show up on different series in the mid to late 1970's. Then the same stuff in the 1980's. Then again in the 2000's, and now 2010's. While, there is still "some" stuff to learn, is there really anything new under the sun on the various dates/mm pairs in 20th century REG sets with respect to pops, price guide values, estimated pieces extant, strike, luster, and eye appeal? A high percentage of the best SLQs have gone through the TPG's, and most of them more than once spurred on by REG set fever.
  
  
  
  Seems like we regurgitate much of the same old stuff now. Is this to bring up to speed a bit the latest round of new collectors and dealers who have only been around for 5-10 years? Generate more interest or promotions within a series? On the SLQ's I'm sure Jay Cline wrote several of those older articles.
  
  
  
  For collectors looking at very low grade SLQ's this info from the article is helpful on identifying a 1916 without a date:
